.410/45 colt question from newbie
« on: December 25, 2004, 04:31:47 PM »
I just scoped and range tested my new 223. Already looking for new barrels.

I have looked and searched but can not find alot of info on this barrel.

I "assume" it is a rifled barrel in .451-2

That means the .410 is undersized.

Questions.

Is it accurate with both ammo ?

Will firing .410 shot ruin the rifling ?

I know shot is contained in the wad but. I hate to assume alot ?

Thanks in advance and I really enjoy this site

hi richardj -

welcome aboard !!!

i dont have a 410/45 barrel but you have some good questions.

the choke is a screw-in used for when you want to blast birds using 410 shotshells. you have to remove the choke to shoot 45's.

the shotshell wad base will expand and will fill up any gap caused by the difference between the 45 and 410. the shotshell wad is a plastic cup that holds the shot inside of the shell.

when you shoot shotshells, the choke is in, and with the barrel being rifled, i would hazard a guess that with the weight of the shot, the wad would not engage the rifling enough to impart any reasonable amount of spin on the shot. most likely, the plastic wad will strip off into the rifling as it passes down the barrel. this just a guess, other guys here with these guns may have some experience they can share.

Buy him one!!!.... I can see it now, a stainless with a synthetic stock, perhaps even a Survivor model, leaning in the corner of the cab or in a nice little gun rack, ready to pop a nasty coyote!!!. Try the Winchester white box Value Pak (40 to the box) 45 grain hollow points (important to get the 45/hp's), Wal Mart has them for about $13.00 a box, they seem to be the "gold standard" for accuracy out of these little guns....<><....

I zeroed the gun with the white box. Good stuff.
Also picked up a box of 50g V-max from Blackhills (blue box) =~ $19
Shoots about dead on with white box.
Overall I love the gun.
Need to get my 12 yr old daughter one first.
223/25-06/ .50 muzzleloader
Figure it would be perfect for her.
She got her first deer this year with a knight inline during youth season.
She now has a license for late muzzleloader.
The .410/45 colt would be a perfect "barnyard" gun for dad.
It is amazing how close you can get to a deer at night with a tractor or combine
410 would be real hard on pigeons and sparrows also.

I have a .45/410 and I love it..

yes it is a .451/452 dia...I am currently using serria 240 JHP behide 24.5 grains of H110...it is a little rocket.

Make sure you take out the choke before you shoot anything other than a shotshell in it....

And DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on COWBOY AMMO, it does not shoot worth a damn.  Buy some brass and reload your own...look for data on 45 colt +p or TC info...rember that my rounds and any HEAVY rounds you make are not suitable for SAS Revolvers...
Keep them in the 10 Ring my Butt, Keep them on the 10

I have one of these 45/410 & have not had much luck with the 45 colt loads. 410 is great but I cannot get any great accuracy out of the 45 colt but have not really hotrodded any loads, really would like a 45 colt that shoots well on this frame. I think the jump from the case to the rifling is too far for great accuracy but that is only a theory. Anyone else with this barrel out there have any suggestions we all would appreciate it. :D
thanks 1hole 4570
