Well i've done it again

I put a 45-70 handi on order this morning and it should be here by the end of the week. I just couldnt help it, the little voices told me to do it :) . I have been wanting one for quite a while. Any loads or things that may help me with this gun would be greatly appriciated. This is my first 45-70 so it's all new to me. What factory ammo does yours shoot best? I will most likely handload some but want a good factory ammo too because it may take a while for me to get the equipment i need for it.  How will your 22" handi 45-70 group and at what range? Thanks alot.

P.S. This brings me up to 6 break open single shots and 7 barrels (just the ne barrel for everygun but one wich is a 44 and 22 combo) and i still have 2-3 other singleshots planned :).
Ihope there is no cure for handi itus because this is a desiese I dont mind :)

I got my 45-70 Handi in October - after shooting y first deer with it about a week after getting it, my hi-power rifles are gonna be gathering a lot of dust  :grin:

There are a lot of options for loads from mild (about 1300 fps) to wild (2100 fps).  I stick to the mild - 383gr. cast bullet with about 28gr of bullseye 2400.

You should get lots of suggestions, pick the one you enjoy the most and best fits your hunting needs.

The rem 300gr JHP shoot good as well as the 405gr FN. If you want something with more punch, the PMC 350gr RN have exactly that at around 2100 fps but have some fierce recoil. :wink:  The Win 300gr also shoot well if you want something in the middle at 1800 fps. The PMC shoot the best of the bunch in mine with 2½-3" 200yds 3-shot groups, the others shot just a tab better than that at 100yds. If you're gonna shoot a lot from the bench, you might consider some lead in the stock and a Sims Limbsaver recoil pad.

thanks guys. sounds bout like the accuracy i was looking for. I wil probly load 405 grainers for hunting, and maybe some of those roundball loads for plinking. I think a roundball going under 1000 fps would really knock a can head over heels :). Cant wait till it gets here

The heavier and faster the load..you might think about adding some weight to the stock...they will kick...and also...either pick up at your local trap and skeet range...one of those gel cheek pads they use on trap guns...that really helps a-lot on the hevier loads...takes all the cheek slapping right out of it and allows you to snug the cheek in firmly to the stock...

You really should think about reloading for it...that way you can taylor any load to you...and the rifle...and will give you the opourtunity to try all the different combinations available...

Most of the 45-70 factory loads are loaded for the trapdoor levels...there are some loaded much hotter...like the PMC 350 grain loads...those will take just about anything you want to with it...another good one...is the Winchester 300 grain Nosler load...while I don't shoot the factory loading...I do handload this bullet at a much higher velocity and can say my results on whitetails is simply awsome...and the Nosler Partitons reputation is simply great......if your wanting to shoot cast bullets in your 45-70 for plinking or for hunting...then reloading will be your best bet for getting a great shooting load...and there are guys here that only shoot cast bullets...heck...the even make there own...and use them...so...you can get tons of tips and tricks to shooting them from those guys...


I think you choose wisely...the 45-70 is a great round...and very very very addictive...once you get used to shooting those big chunks of lead...it is difficult to go back to a smaller caliber... :wink:

I just picked mine up in Nov. first time I shot it at 25yrds I had 4rnds touching and 1 about 1.5 high and I know I pulled that one, (Something about anticepating recoil ya know :roll: ) Those where some 405gr cast LBT style at trapdoor levels. This rifle is gonna be a hoot to shoot. 8)
