With all the talk about the 500 S&W I decided to check ammo prices. I seen 20 round boxes for 36.00 :shock: Right above that they had 480 Ruger and 475 Linbaugh for 18.00 for 20 round box. Seems to me that the 475 Linbaugh would have been a better choice. From what I understand you can shoot 480 Ruger in a 475 Linbaugh. At least you can in the Marlin lever action. Does not really matter know that I have my 45-70 TC barrel for my G2, but I would probally buy a 475 Linbaugh if it were available in the Handi.

Midway has 420gr. .501 dia. hardcast bullets for  $47.25 for 250 ,which isn't to bad. But BBF ,imagine reaming it ou to a 50/110 or 50/90 or a 50 Alaskan !

Its the perfect project gun, if you ra Big Bore Fan !

i think your right about them missing the boat.they seem to do that from time to time.i think they need something in 338 or 35 cal.

you have a rifle or pistol barrel in 45-70 for your G2?

I was over at Goex Forum board this morning and for months I have been PM'ing Rdnck on the forum board about none other than the 50-90 cartridge.

He has owned 8 rifles all Shiloh's with various barrel twist 1:36, 1:24 and I believe 1:26 and only one shot worth a darn.  Rdnck is an avid shooter in the BPCR circuit so he is not new to these rifles at all.  His comment to me stated that unless you get a 50-90 that is over 13 pounds and shoot it off of cross sticks your gonna have a problem.  But the biggest problem IS making it shoot with the right boolit.  General feed back is a boolit over 650-gr  :eek:

Yep, I believe H&R missed the boat on the .500 S&W... I believe I can do more with my Ultra 45-70 even with heavier boolits.  It aint about the speed of the boolit as some have pointed out comparing both the 45-70 and the .500 S&W, at least not to me anyways.  They can put out the .500 S&W but as with other calibers will it shoot well?  Its an awefull spendy investment to find that maybe its a dud in the H&R barrels.  They haven't even fixed the problem with the 38-55 Target Model yet, but I see they are moving on with other calibers just to fit a desire for more.  Heck let em fix what they got first.

We will see if it dies off or not by the reports from those that will get them.  I'm just curious as to what barrel twist rate they will have.  The case length I believe is close to a 50-70 which shoots a heck of allot better than the 50-90 does.

Jeff, I have a 23'' rifle barrel. I just sighted it in yesterday. When shooting of the bench you better becareful. Scope got me right on the bridge of the nose. This a nice lite weight carbine. But what good is a gun if you can not feel it go off once in a while. :) Buckeye, I would like to have a true 50 cal, but in old calibers like the 50-70, 50-90 or 50-110 (I WANT A OCTAGON BARREL) It would be nice if they offered a nice 45-70 26'' octagon barrel on the Buffalo Classic.

I would never rechamber a 357 NEF to 35 Whelen as much as I would like a Whelen.

The rate of twist just BLOWS for shooting the heavy weight bullets the Whelen is made for.

You would never get good preformance with that twist with 220-250 Grain bullets.

On the 500 I am stoaked.  Sure they cost more right now but consider

1.  You can reload for about the same as a 480 or 454 both of which USED TO BE AS MUCH TO BUY FACTORY AS THE 500 IS TODAy

2.  Also I would expect the cost to come down over time as more people buy 500s as they are chambered in MORE carbines.  

3.  You can bet Marlin will have a lever in 500 sooner or later.

5.  If they came out with a 480, 475, 454, etc all you guys would have bitched and asked why not the 500.  We handi-holics are NEVER happy with our choices we always want something else.

As for me I am going to get a barrel for the 500 ASAP and I can't wait.  I am going to do some mods and I am really excited to have something so unique, powerful and versitle.

Loaded with 275-325 grainers and a moderate charge it will still be powerful but lite kicking in a rifle.  Load up 440s at max and you have something that could be used on Cape Buffalo or Elephants.  

I will be doing some recoil reducing mods as well.  Any suggestions are appreciated.  I am thinking merc reducer in the stock, limb saver pad and possible magna port job.

jspirko, Not to bust your bubble or flame ya either, but there's a few of her been shootin' 220-250 grain bullets jsut fine from our 357 Maximums. If it stabilizes at 1500 fps, 2500 fps will stabilize 'em just fine. Yeah, Remington used a 1-12 in theri Whelen, and that is the common twist for a 35, but that twist will stabilize 300 grainers, don't see much need for that. A 338 anything would make more sense than the 500 SW, but obviously, logic has no bearing on the chamberings NEF offers, beyond what they think they can sell.

Actually Remington uses 1 turn in 16" for all their .35s from the .35 Remington to the .35 Whelen to the .350 Remington Magnum.

And here all this time I thought that Remington used a 1:12 for the Whelen. Thanks for straightenen' me out, perhaps that explains why the 18.5 twist of the NEF shoots the heavies so well.

JPH is right, I shoot a 250 gr Beartooth as the bullet of choice in my .357 Mag Handi.  Since it's only 1200 fps and groups around 1" at 100 yards, the barrel should do just fine in a .35 Whelen rechamber.

However, I'm wondering why anyone would need a .35 Whelen in a Handi?  If I buy another barrel, it will be a .30-06, which is sufficient for anything from "squirrel TO MOOSE" (especially if you use Green Box Remington's)!  :-D

There is a lot of hype about the 35 Whelen and could never see it. Had a 340 Wby once what a bone crusher it was. My big gun is a 300 Win mag and it is collecting dust. If you can't do it with an 06 you got trouble.
Now that 45-70 Hand gun that is another story, too bad we can't use that in Canada.

You can use a 45-70 rifle for hunting but not a 45-70 Revolver (Hand gun)
Hand guns can only be used on approved pistol ranges with a permit to carry them there. I find the hand gun , I am talking about in a minute.
Is that some baby or what? 45-70 hand canon wow. I love it! :D

T/C has made the 45-70 barrel for the Contender for years.  It was availiable back in 85, that's when I got mine.  A lot of pressure and velocity is lost out of the Super 14" barrel I have.
