I would sugest to look at CZ452, cost is very simular ($450 cdn), they are very accurate and well used by many of the shooters, I dont think that I've seen Marlins at the firing line

I have seen some marlins that are scary accurate..heck I drove myself nuts trying to get a tricked out 22 to shoot as accurate as my stock $90 marlin from k-mart!

That said... They are not silhouette rifles. I don't think you will find the triggers adequate and there are VERY limited number of shooters shooting them (I have yet to see one). The CZ for the same $ as you mentioned is another story all together. Tons of people shoot them. People have web sites selling mods for them (www.452.com I think) very cheap. Triggers are easily adj and can be modified very easy. People can help you out with issuies like ammo preference and the like. Mutiple different rifle with drasticly different feels for NRA silhouette. Silhouette model is synthitic stocked very tapered bbl, Amer is wood stocked, little heaver than the silhouette model, the varmit is short but has a tapered "bull" bbl that is legal in both classes, and the lux, trainer, basic, style, etc. all in the $200-$300USD price range.

Both my silhouette SB rifles are Anschutz, I however started with a CZ and had NO problems finding a new shooter that was looking for a segway into our sport and snatched it up quickly. Not bashing marlin, but I doubt I would have been able to get my $300usd back out of it.

Hope this helps,

George

Thanks for the quick responses. Does anyone know of a good CV dealer in western British Columbia?

kroegs, where abouts in BC are you? I saw a used BRNO(CZ) at a gun shop last weekend. Most dealers can get them for you however it seems the only shops that have a selection in stock are those big boys out of Alberta. Watch out at local gun show's, they often show up.

I started out last year with a Marlin 880SQ (predecessor of the 980V).  While it is certainly accurate enough, I think the advice to look at the CZ is valid.  The marlin has a heavy barrel, so it is only legal for the standard rifle class and does require a Rifle Basix trigger to shoot well.  The CZ will allow you to shoot both classes.

Incidently, I bought an Anschutz 1712 last year so I could shoot both classes.   Oddly enough, I struggle to score as well in matches as I did with the marlin.

I'm in Victoria. Be sure to hit the Gunshow in Duncan this Sunday. Be there early. I recently sold two decent 22's to new shooters for cheap. A CIL Anchutz and a Walther KKJ. If you can get into either of these rifles, or a BRNO/CZ, decent/used for about $300 Cdn your doing alright.
