30-30 cartridges won't fit????? Is it the Lee dies or me??
« on: December 30, 2004, 01:12:30 PM »
42 of 120 cartridges would not fit in my rifle chamber.
The brass that would not fit was signifantly shorter than my brass that would fit. I pulled the bullets from the cartridges that would not fit( length average 2.025) compared to brass that would fit (average 2.035)
There was a crease in the neck just above the bevel between the neck and the body of the brass.
I have been reloading about 5 years calibers from 243 to 45-70. Never have I had such a problem. All other dies are RCBS.
What happened and what is the cure.
Details.....
Recently I bought 150 New Winchester 30-30 unprimed brass,
trimmed to 2.035 full length resized with Lee Deluxe Die set
full length resizer die. The case was expanded with the Lyman M die short case 30 caliber. The Bullet was cast ww Lyman # 311041 used to be #311041 173 grains with a Lyman 30 caliber gas check # 2827267.sized to .309.
Each case was primmed, charged with powder and bullet seated with Lee deluxe Die set seater die and crimped with a
Lee factory crimp with a solid crimp. The cartritges are to be shot in a Winchester Model 64 30-30 leaver action.

Poorly adjusted crimping die, or possibly using the wrong shellholder.

Sounds like the bullet may be hanging up during the seating process or the seating die is adjusted to far down.

Like ricciardelli says, this certainly sounds like too much crimp pressure, collapsing the neck into the shoulder.  Factory .30-30 brass has a short body so there can be no interference between the shoulder and the chamber unless the case was deformed during loading.   Load a few rounds without the crimp and see if they chamber okay - I'm betting that they will.  This is not that uncommon of a problem and is discussed in many reloading manuals.

If the brass that doesn't fit is shorter than the brass that does fit it probably wouldn't be the crimp adjustment - My bet is that the bullet seating process is pushing the neck back into the case - causing that "crimp" at the shoulder / body junction.

The cure is to chamfer the inside of the case neck and clean it before priming and powdering the case.
