Please tell me all your thoughts on this combo...good, bad, or ugly.   The more, the better.  Thanks! :-)

Flat out awesome! I have 7600's in 35 Whelen, 257 Roberts and 35 Remington(carbine) and a 760 carbine in 308 Winchester. Unfortunately I had to recently sell my 760 in 300 Savage due to financial reasons. If anyone needs extra clips, I have three. The pumps are great. They are easier to use than a bolt for me and I rarely use mine now. When I go out I am grabbing for a pump of some sort. Try it, you'll like em.

I have had one since 89 and love it.  It does everything I ask of it in Alaska and more.  Accurate enough, quick to point and being able to shoot 150 - 300 grain bullets gives me a wide range.

Although, I have settled on the 225 grain spitzer for all applications except ptargiman.

The 300 Savage came to me in a deal. I hated to see it go, but what can you do. My Roberts, no way man! Just messin with you. I looked to long to let that one go and besides it got bloody this year. A nice size doe.

My primary moose gun is my 7600 in .35 Whelen - and I love it.

I replaced the wood stock with a plastic one, and I carry it in all weather conditions.  I shoot 220 grain bonded core bullets that I swage myself, and I've developed a load that is very accurate at 2637 fps.

I have nothing but praise for this rifle and cartridge combo.
Hunting is Exciting!  Bolt actions are BORING!!
Don't mix the two!

257, Good for you. I finally shot a doe with my 35 carbine that I gat last year. Now I have to get my 35 Whelen set up. I put the 25-06 on layaway, the closest I will get to a 257! MIKE.

Oh, the lost virtues of reduced loads ....

For a Whelen, and utilizing H4895 and the %60 rule, you can take any H4895 recipe and reduce the charge by 60% and get an effective deer/blackie killer out to 200 yards.  That should suffice for the bulk of most guys' hunting.  Otherwise, get a nice rifle rest (Caldwell lead sled) that reduces recoil, develop your hunting/accuracy loads with that, practice with reduced loads/handgun loads so you know how to operate your rifle, and head afield with the big kicker knowing you'll only have to absorb one, maybe two blasts on any particular day's hunt.

In the end, you won't have to compromise because of recoil and you'll still have all that firepower to level any game in the forest and put the meat on the table.
