Depending on the barrel you want and if they have it in stock perhaps 4 weeks or so from start to finish is about what it's been taking. Before anyone here can really suggest a caliber rifle barrel for "deer and such" we really have to know more of the hunting conditions, intended game (and such?) your expierence and abilities and if you reload or not, thanks....<><....

TrapperZach before we can offer much advise on which barrel to get you need answer a few of questions.

Will you do most of your hunting across open fields or in thick woods?

Do you mind heavy recoil and/or a load report?

What calibers do you all ready own?

Do you want to be able to hunt larger or tougher game like elk or bear with this gun?

Do you want to use this gun for predator hunting as well as for deer?

Is the cost of ammo a factor?

Do you reload or want to start reloading your own ammo?

Answer these questions and we can narrow down the choises a little.

well it depends on hunting conditions.  If you are hunting in heavily wooded areas where your shots are going to be under 125 yards a .44 mag would be your best bet. If your hunting in open areas where your gonna pass 150 yards you should go with a 30-06 or a .308.

i'd go 45-70 if recoil is not a problem. sounds like a 45-70 would be in it's glory where you are hunting

TrapperZack, I love the 243 and that would be a good barrel for anything up to and including deer. But if you plan on hunting bigger game I would get a 30-06. Then you are ready for just about any game or situation. The '06 has been around for decades but it is still my ideal of the all around hunting rifle. But get whatever barrel you want. We all know it won't be your last

Your shots are close range so you don't need a reel fast, flat shooting caliber like the 270.

You said you would like to have the ability to hunt bigger game than deer so I would rule out the .243.

.280 ammo is hard to find and rather costly if you don't reload.

Sounds like the 06 is the ticket to me.  Ammo is plentiful in many bullet styles & weights for everything from predators to bear or elk.  Cheep ammo can be had for practice.

I wonder why everyone is overlooking the most reliable and proven deer round ever, the 30-30. These are some of the most accurate Handi rifle barrels out there. Recoil is low and 130 yard shots are not a problem either when sighted at 100 yard zero. However if the larger game issue were to arise, then the 30-06 is definitely an all around caliber, and has a history of being an accurate caliber in the Handis also. Just wouldn't want to use one if I knew shots were going to be 25 yards or under. Some of the bow stands that we set up here in the early season are in the thick stuff and are specifically designed for shots no longer than 25 yards, but in rifle season we hunt them sometimes too.

I would have suggested the  30-30 myself if TrapperZach had not said he may want to hunt bigger/tougher game some day.  Factory fodder is limmited to round nose bullets but if you reload their are lots of options available.

7-08. Simply the finest deer round ever invented. Using Hornady Light Mag ammo, the ONLY thing I shoot in mine, it performs like the .280 with standard loads.  Has a wide variety of factory loads available and easy to reload if you want to. If you need more than the 7-08 you need more than a .30 can deliver and if you don't why use more.

308

All the advantages of the 06 with cheap surplus brass. If not the 308 I would go with the 06.  I think the extra diameter of the 30 cal is much better than the 60 to 100 fps you gain with the 7mm
