Which case is the 50 Alaskan based on, the 45-70 or the 348 Winchester? If on the 45-70, you would probably be ok, if on the 348 Win, then I would begin to be suspect of the cased head diameter and resulting thrusts loads and such. I know there is a firm that converts Marlins to both the 450 and the 50 Alaskan which is suggestive of the strength parameters required of these cartridges. This info is somewhat dated; Shooting Times, April 2003 but they show the three Cor Bon loadings which operate from 26,800 psi, to 49,500 psi. So if NEF is willing to go to 50,000 psi on that case head diameter (????) so long as you were observant of pressures, I see no reason why you couldn't. Glad it's your shoulder though. I would be cautious of a cartridge based on the 348 Winchester case though, It is truely hughe at nearly 5/8" diameter.

As a side note, it strikes me funny that of the three loads shown, one is driving a 400 grain bullet ot 1676 fps and another is driving a 440 grain bullet to 1625 fps. The one load is solid in 45-70 territory and the other is at the far ragged edge of it. This cartridge does make a lot more sense in a rifle than in a handgun though.

I would love to see a 45-70 case and a 500 S&W case side by side.  Something tells me that the 500 S&W Handi-Rifle will be a hit (no pun intended here) right off the bat.

At the price of ammo from Midway reloading IS the ONLY option.

I've already seen some loading data using 31.0 gr of H110    Here is a pick I found tonight while doing some looking around for more information.

The 500 S&W case is 1.625" long compared to the .45-70's 2.105" length.

I'm falling over for that .50 Alaskan.

Now all one would have to do is have a barrel made for the .50 Alaskan and the loading would be easy for it.  Using old data for the 50-90 for the mild loads to way up to the max of the .50 Alaskan

Now that's a Buffalo Wacker  :-D

Here's a lengthy thread comparing the 50 Alaskan to the .45-70...they say the 50 alaskan case is based on the .348 winchester.

We are Nuts
« Reply #15 on: January 02, 2005, 06:49:06 AM »
I was going to say you guys are nuts because I am not the nut job here.  However, I have been nuts on other things so often we Handi's it was not fair to say you guys.

We handi holics are (censored word) insane.

Here we have a 500 Smith that with 440 is powerful enough for (censored word) elephants.  A round with balistic advantage over ANY black powder 50/100 you name it the 500 Smith has more power as it is.

500 Alaskan?  Is it more powerful then the 500 Smith?  Doubt it if so we are spliting hairs.

Yep here we have the (censored word) ultimate in power for any big bore carbine.  We have a round that with 440 Cast Lead have FULLY penetrated the skull of a bull elephant and what do you want to do to it.

Rechamber it, modify it, neck it, rebarrel it on and on and on.

We are (censored word) insane!  Well not me guys not this time.  I am buying one as soon as I can and I am not doing ANYTHING with it.

I will do some mods to the gun, recoil stuff, stock work, peep sites etc.  Yet the round is staying what it is.  You guys have to go off on your lunicy with out me this time.  Old Jack is just stoaked and will be leaving his 500 Smith a 500 Smith.

Hell I just don't think a round with the potential to produce 4000 pounds of muzzle energy with a 50 cal slug needs much improving.  To me this is like improving the 45-70 by rechambering to 458 Win mag.  I could be done but why.  I bet no one here with a 45 shoots the hottest heaviest rounds the 45 can shoot and it you do it ain't often.  Tell me guys how many of you shoot max loads of 4198 under 500 Grain bullets in a 45-70.  If you do, has it put you in the hospital yet.

I am a fellow handi holic and I don't even get all the rechamber stuff with the 500 :sniper:

Yep we are nuts!  I have a closet full of guns that proves I am nuts too but you guys are truly making the case for Handi's causing brain damage this time  :-D
