Did'nt work. Anyway this is the story with pictures of an 1100 lb hog killed with a hand-gun in Lake County Fl. I received it in an E-mail & I can't seem to attach it to a post.  If someone wants to read the story and see pics, and post it for others to see, give me an E-mail address and I'll send it as an attachment.   This thing is a monster!

We can't see the post, but this is likely the 1000# "Hogzilla", an infamous urban legend....or not.  It was killed in Georgia, not Florida.  First widely reported in July of this year, its remains are supposedly burried in a secret location. It was not reported how it was killed.
http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/hogzilla.asp

Note the following: "Datelined Alapaha, Georgia, the 28 July 2004 Associated Press article advised readers to remain somewhat skeptical of the tale because its writer had been unable to verify the size or weight of the hog, or indeed any of the other details given in the account. Only two people supposedly saw the beast: its slayer, and the owner of the property where it was downed."

And this:  "The picture is all Griffin has to back up his claims. He and Ken Holyoak, owner of the plantation, buried the beast on the property and did not want to hassle with slaughtering it since the meat of large feral hogs is typically not very good."

National Geographic is supposed to have unearthed the remains in November and will televize the forensic reconstruction.  We'll see....

Lonestar, I've seen the "Hogzilla" thing, This is a different animal. It was shot by a cattlerancher near Orlando Fl. It was weighed by the meat processer and the meat was donated to the Fire Dept. and local homeless shelters. I can't find it on the internet or I could post it as a url.
The pics are too big to post in the album. Guess no-one is interested anyway.  :(

well now that link worked.  most folks around here aint going to go through a lot of effort if your link isnt working.  now that the link is working, i am sure more folks will be interested.
i know i found it interesting, what a pig!   i dont care what the weight was, that sucker is huge!  i would want the casull for that thing!
the thing i dont understand is that hogs routinely grow that big in captivity.  so if they have enough food, why would it be so hard to believe one could get that big in the wild?   i mean i know it isnt very common, but definately possible.

What are you guys smoking? I clicked it again. Again I got two spyware programs that attempted to load but were thwarted by Spybot and a pop up. NO image of any kind. The page that loaded made it look like maybe one would need to be a member or something to view it.

Dunno GB, I've opened the link several times with no problems :?  But if you think it could cause problems you might ought to delete it just in case. But it is a pretty impressive animal and I think a believable story. The guy is shown with a large stainless revolver equipped with a scope. Someone who knows a little more than me about hand-guns could probably tell from the pic what model it is.

If there is an image there it is blocked for me for some reason. I have no firewalls or such in place. BUT for sure anyone going there without spyware protection will get two programs added to their computer.

Someone right click with their cursor on the image. Copy and paste the URL of just the photo (should be a .jpg) and then make it an image here so we can all see without getting the spyware.

did it work?

OK I've now edited your post to make the above URLs into images. Let's see what happens. GB

How bout them apples guys. That's all I can see on the site. When I make the URLs you say you're seeing a hog into image links here at GBO you can see what it is I see. Green frowns. I'm thinking because my computer is protected against the spyware and pop ups I'm not allowed to see the images. GB

yes that is the picture.
already some different info.  according to the snopes story, it was shot in fla. but i dont believe snopes fer nothin'.   when you make your living peddling b.s., you aint got much crediblilty.

i figured it was your spyware protection that was preventing you to view it.  i would rather not see it then have crap put on my computer.  thanks to van/tx, problem solved.
thanks van

The story about the hog is on my computer at work and I don't remember the details but evidently the hog had been helping himself to the ranchers corn supply for several years.  Of course my story could be bogus.  Ya just never know about these things.  I'll post what I have later....Van

Saw a full body mount of this hog or a very close one at the Eastern outdoors Show in Harrisburg PA 1 or 2 years ago. I kinda remember TX also, but not positive. Told the wife it would make a great dining room table if we put a nice top on him. If hes there this time {in Feb} I'll try to get some details and post them.

Yes Sir, That's a big hog. Somehow I just can't digest that part bout ,"no wild taste because it had been feeding on corn."  I have hunted hogs all over the south, except Fla.  While in the military I was stationed in Ga, Al, La and Ar. I grew up in Ms hunting everything in the woods.  The only wild hogs I ever had that did not have a wild taste were those we trapped and fed out for 30-45 days before butchering them.

I have a few wild hogs on my place here in Texas, they feed on corn year round at the deer feeders, they feed on watermelon, wheat and other grains grown by the locals, but they also feed on acorns, roots, dead animals and other things.  If you kill one, it does taste gamey.  One that weighs as much as the Fla hog in the picture would have to have a wild taste.

I've shot free roaming hogs in several states and I honestly cannot say any of them ever really tasted enough different than grocery store pork for my taste buds to know the difference. None of them were feeding on corn either or at least not primarily so. In some cases none was even close to them.

At least from my personal experience with them in at least 4-5 states there is no gamey taste and that included some pretty big ones.

IME it's the same as with fish and deer - a lot of the "gamey" taste has to do with how the meat is handled and prepared.  Shoot the animal in 90F heat and don't get it cooled soon and it will taste gamey.  Do a poor job of trimming - same result.  Take the animal to a "commercial" game meat packer and good luck - who knows how they treat your meat, and how much they mix it with the meat of other hunters.

When I lived in Alaska many fishermen there didn't like the taste of salmon - to me that's the best tasting fish there is.  After going fishing with some of these folks it became clear why they didn't like salmon; on a 75F day they'd kill the fish and leave it sitting in the sun for 3-4 hours, then clean it and take it home.  The meat was half rotten before they got it home - I'd hate the taste too!  I kept my salmon alive until I could get them on ice, then killed them and got them cold ASAP.  My salmon always tasted great.....wonder why.   :-D

I agree a lot of the taste is in how an amimal is handled in the field.  I always try to gut and cool the meat as quickly as possible, then process it as quick as I can.  We have a walk-in freezer taken off an old ice cream truck and mounted on skids, it is set at 34 degrees.  I usually leave a deer or hog hanging for 8-10 days before final processing.  I do my own processing to include making sausage, etc, and ensure all the silver meat and fat is removed.  It still has a gamey taste.  Hogs are pretty much the same way.  I agree it depends largely on what they feed on.  There is a very big difference in a hog taken in West Texas and one taken in Ga.  They just don't have the good choice of food here that they do there.  Pretty much like the deer, take a West Texas deer and compare the taste to one killed in the Piney woods of East Texas..........big difference in taste even after being careful of how it is handled in the field.  Diet does make a difference.

I've eaten a good many feral hogs.  I can honestly say that I've never noticed a wild taste. I prefer it to store bought myself.  Wife even likes it and she won't eat deer meat.  Of course I like javelina so what the hell do I know :D .....Van
