hello everyone,
I have recently bought a .223 handi, as i have been reading around on it i have read alot of good and a lot of bad...i hope this rifle is a good shooter, how do you like yours? is it a pretty good rifle? I hope i made a good choice on this rifle, i have faith in it but i shot wolf ammo in it and it shot poorly but i was told wolf ammo is not very accurate so i am going to try other ammo, what kind of accuracy do you get out of your rifles and what are some of the ammo that your handi likes?

Hello MIdeerhunter,  first get rid of that wolf ammo!!! My off the shelf H&R .223 shoots -1" groups all day at 100 yards but I'm not even a contender on this board!!! Try the Winchester 45 grain hp White box Value Pack ammo. It's 40 rounds for about $14.00 at Wal Mart and sometimes just a bit more than 1/2 that when you can find it on sale!! It seems to be the standard that all other .223 ammo is judged by in these Handi's....If i'm not mistaken someone here (perhaps Jeff223?) has shot about a .25" group with his H&R .223!!!....<><.... :grin:

Do you reload or do you want factory recommendations.
White box winchester 45 gr sold at walmart 1/2 to 3/4" groups at 100
Myself and a few other shooters find that 50gr nosler BT's with +/- .5gr 27grains of WW748 go from 26.5 to 27.5 .1 gr at a time after polishing your barrel (in the FaQs top of the page) and breaking in.
Same powder and 53gr Sierra match king will also rival the groups you get from the White box Winchester. Mostly the handi's don't seem to like the heavier bullets 60 and up but some shoot them extremely well.
I am still working on a load for the 45 gr hornady vmax moly coated. I have also shot some 55grain military type ammo with less than stellar results.

My gun will shoot 1/2" to 3/4" groups at 100y using Winchester 45g JHP. Haven't reloaded for the gun yet but I am going to here soon. Also, I have shot 52g Speer match hollowpoints in the bulk form and they also shoot great.

Hey Hildy, what manufacture of bulk ammo did you shoot in the 52 gr.?  I know Black Hills makes a cartridge that uses 52 gr. match hollow points, but I'm not sure if its the same bullets you are talking about.

I tried a few different 223 brands before I started reloading . I had the best luck with American eagle which is Manufactured by Federal Ammo.  8)

Hey nova,

Honestly, I don't think it even has a name. My uncle gave me 50 rounds to try a while back and said they were called "explodin hollowpoints". The bullet used is a Speer 52g match hp. The hollowpoint is 1/8th wide and 3/8th" deep so they expand very violently.
