how do these Rossi rifles shoot?there has been talk here about them for some time now.tell me about how good they are at 50yds.the 357 and the 44mag rifles

I've heard those Rossi's are an excellent waterfowl firearm. While hunting from a jon-boat the rossi can be used quite well as a boat paddle. :wink:

Jeff,I have a 22 mag that shoots very well considering what I paid for it .I can hit a small dog food can with it at 125 yards plus off hand.It smacks crows and squirell out to those distances very well.I can't say about the 357 and 44 mag though.

I have 3 Rossi .44's and all shoot great. As a matter of fact they group better than my NEF handi rifle in .44 mag.

thanks for the replies but i would like to know the size of the groups.group size?i just wanted to compair nef with the rossi rifles.im not saying i want one but i just wondered.

RV,i have the Contender shooting on paper only.its gotten real cold up here in Michigan.down near 0 at night and the wind is blowing too.when the weather breaks im going to finish it off on the bench with a bullet of some kind.i have 3 differant ones to try.

Jeff223 when you ask for group size you are asking about an individual rifle of one brand versus one rifle of another brand. I'm not sure that will tell you anything because all rifles and all shooters are different. I can only tell you about my 243 NEF and 223 Rossi since that is what I have. There isn't enough difference to talk about. I can't be any more precise 'cause only one has a scope and it is a youth model. I suppose you just need to pick one up and try it for yourself. BTW I like the fit and finish better on the handis, but both are worth what we pay for them. I know that isn't what you wanted but it is the best I can do.

OK,i know what you are saying.i just thought someone here had a rifle that was a outstanding shooter.im sure there are some real good shooting Rossi rifles out there and those are the rifles i like.nef,rossi,remingtom,savage,cz,its just dont matter.i like the shooters

I'm actually not surprised by that. The NEF has a throat that is the same as the Ruger revolver chamber and will chamber round nosed bullets seated to an overall length of 1.710. Most factory ammo is loaded to 1.6. This is a difference of nearly 1/8" in chamber length and is an almost surefire accuracy thief when using the shorter OAL loadings. My NEF will cut 1" groups at 50 and 65 yards with 270 and 300 grain bullets seated to the longer length. Ditchdigger was having trouble with his new 44 barrel untill he began loading seating the bullet just off the lands.

An excessively long chamber in the 357 barrels prompted many to the 357 Maximum rechamber in an effort to get a more appropriate fit of case length, bullet length and OAL. My 357 Handi wouldn't stay on a paper plate (literally) at 50 yards untill I rechambered it, and in my 44 with my slow soft 200 grain cast loads, I have to seat to the longer length to get any accuracy. This load seats to the middle of the driving band past the first lube groove, shallow seating indeed.

Not disputing SSS, it's just that SSS saying his Rossi shoots better than his NEF strongly suggests a difference in the chamber dimensions of these rifles, and has little to do with the real accuracy either are capable of.

I hear what you're saying and would agree with it, if it wasn't for the fact that my .357 Handi shoots .38 Specials pretty well. It will chamber and shoot .360 DW's, so you know the chamber is long, but I don't get any better groups with the .360's than I do with .357's. Sure, I'm shooting some 250 gr Beartooth LFNGC's that are pretty long (they won't fit in a revolver), but I also shoot 180 gr XTP's very well in .360 and .357 seated to the cannelure on both.

Very well to me is close to 1"-1 1/2" at 100 yards.

well with my rossi .44 I can put a bullet right through a bullet hole at 25 yards and never touch the edges. It shoots like a lazer. I'm gonna try some more .44 loads in my handi and try to bring the group size down a bit. It shoots good enough for deer at 25 yards, it will keep them all touching, but boy that 1 bullet hole stuff is really great. Buying me a rossi .410 of some sort sometime this week to make a close range slug gun, would also be a good coyote gun out to about 60 yrds.

I've got a Rossi .357/ stainless? It shoots the Sellier Belot 158 gr. tmj/flat points into 3" at 1oo yds.

Regular REMFEDCHESTER 158's average about 2.25" @50yds.

About any .38 sp./158 grn./lrn. loads are good enough for rabbits at 30-40 yds.

My nef handi will put 3 shots in the ten ring on a 22 long rifle target at 50 yards.That is with 357 mag speer gold dot 125 grain hollow points, 357 mag remington umc 125 grain soft point ,and remington umc 38 special+p 125 grain hollow points.I think that is plent accurate for a pistol cartridge. :grin:

When you put it in a rifle, it becomes a rifle cartridge! :lol:

I may be expecting too much, but I don't see any reason a "pistol" cartridge shouldn't shoot as good as any other straight sided cartridge.

I believe that is a goal worth shooting for. My .357 max has at times been sub moa.
Consistency is where the pistol cartridges lack, but the goal remains the same.

You should check out the EMF & Navy arms sites. It sure doesnt look like theyre discontinued to me. I think they market them differently & only import them thru EMF, Navy Arms & LSI. I could be wrong tho.
