Hello, SB
Lloyd is absolutely correct about wheelweights and 2% tin. I have been using 2% and I'm considering going up to 3% tin. I have cast many thousands of ww + 2% tin and they work at all velocities up to 2250 fps.
An interesting note came about last Thursday with my 30-30 Contender 16.25" barrel and two different bullet metals. I was using the Saeco #315-150 grain bullet which is the best performer in all my 30-30s.
One metal combination was Wheelweights and 2% tin and the second one was 3 ww + 1 linotype. The powder charge on both loads was 12.6 grains of Blue Dot. I was shooting at 421 yard steel turkeys and a steel chicken at the same distance. I emptied all of the ww+2% tin with many hits on regular turkeys and several hits on the chickens. I then opened the box of 3 ww + 1 Lino bullets and didn't make any notice that the bullets were different. My accuracy at the 421 yard line diminished to only an occasional hit.One of my Buddies was spotting for me and he noted the difference in overall group that I was shooting and then I checked the note on the box.
I'm going to test this further. I have over 350 pounds of linotype on hand, so your can bet I'm hoping this is not true.
Yesterday, I cast 100 + 30 calliber Lyman 311284 (210 grain dog dick type bullet) with 50-50 WW & linotype. I'm doing this on a recommendation of a friend from the Graybeard Forum.
My 308 cast bullet load (Saeco #315-175 grain) with ww+2% tin gets velocities of 2004 fps average as per chronographed. My 25-06 cast bullet (Saeco #257 - 100 grain) with 25 grains IMR 4227 chronographed at 2245 fps average. I always use 50-50 Alox-Beeswax lube and I never have any leading once the barrel is prepared. I never clean the barrel, unless accuracy drops off.
