Over/Under - Recommendations?
« on: December 28, 2004, 09:30:43 AM »
Hey all-

Would like to purchase an over under 12 ga.  I am looking for something in the 500-800.00 range.. What would you recommend as being a good option?  For 800.00, am I going to get a quality OU or would I be better off going with a pump or semi auto?

Any advice would be great  :D

In my opinion $800 is below the price range of a quality gun. Bottom of the line Beretta, Browning, ect. are the minimum I would consider, and that is above your range. In that $500-800 area you can find some workable guns, but don't expect them to hold up to hard use. I think that amount of money is better spent on a good auto, than a third world former Soviet block O/U.

There are some used Ruger Red Labels on the gun auctions for $800-$850.

There is a fellow over on Shotgun World forum that has a 12 gauge Ruger Red Label All Wealther SS/synthetic that he is trying to sell, asking $950 and is asking if he has it priced too high.

I was talking to him about trading but I think he would prefer selling it.

I would not buy a Ruger shotgun period.  You can get a used Beretta Onxy for around 900 or so. You might be able to find a used SKB/Ithaca/Weatherby in your price range.  They make some nice guns.

Dicks Sporting goods ran a Christmas special on Berreta 686 whitewings for $899.  Great gun and a good price.  The sale is over now though, but you might try to talk with a manager and see if you can get one at the sale price.....

Yeah, think I may go with an auto or pump.. Looking at the 870 12ga pump or the Benelli Nova 12ga.. I am the last person you will find spending under 500 bucks for a shotgun or rifle, but these 2 look good.. Shot a buddy's 870 yesterday at a box of pidgeons and it shot flawlessly but the Nova looks promising as well... What do you guys think of the two next to eachother?

You should be able to locate a nice used O/U for about $800 or maybe even a bit less at times. Not a lot of new ones available in that price range tho.

I have a Stoeger Condor Supreme 20 ga on order. If it ever gets here I'll let you guys know what I think of it. For sure before buying one go read the stories of the folks on the Benelli forums first.

http://www.benelliusa.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

I have and while there seems to be a few common short comings they seem easy enough to work around and fix. The photos of it show some really nicely figured walnut stocks and all folks with them seem to agree they come with it. For $430 out the door I don't see how I can get hurt on this one and I just want to see how it looks and feels for the low end market like you're asking about.

Of course I asked same dealer to get me a .410 SxS Stoeger about a year ago and it's not shown up yet. Took him months to get me a 20 ga. SxS. If the O/Us are as nice as my SxS then this is gonna be a real bargain for the money.

Hunting Guy,

I can't say anything about the Nova but I have been shooting the 870 Wingmasters for 35 years.  In my opinion you can't beat them for the money.  The Wingmaster is going for about $500 around here and I would buy the Wingmaster over the Express even though the Express is half the price.
Good Shooting,
George

In my opinion the O/U is the best all around shotgun a person can own.  In most hunting situations 2 shots is all anyone needs.  The O/U is dependable as they come and they are generally easy to carry in the field all day.  You should be able to find a used Browning Citori, Beretta Onyx or SKB in that price range.  One of my favorite O/U is the Winchester 101 which was discontinued back in the 80s.  But they would be out of your price range.  Good luck.

Whitedoggone,

I'm afraid you've fallen for some old wives tales about the Red Labels. The fit and finish is the equal of Brng. and Berretta. As to the toughness Detrick Apel used to build double rifles in .375 & .458 on this frame. The only change he made was smaller dia. firing pins and pin bushings. I've never heard of one breaking down(I'm sure there have been some). The loose reciever you mentioned is actually a designed enhansment called a "self-openner" The action gets a kick from the mainsprings when it opens. This was an extra cost option on the English "Best" guns in years past as well as today.
The only downers of the Red Label is that POS auto saftey, and a service dept. who just dosen't seem to care what they send to the customer. Ruger needs to go through their service Dept with a pile of pinkslips in-hand. Then hire people who care about what they're doing!

What is the application for the shotgun?

For Range use (Sporting Clays, Trap, Skeet) you should spend the money for a Beretta.

For Field use the Baikal, Stoeger, Huglu would be well within your price range.  And all are decent quality guns.  The Huglu has a better finish.

I have owned or own all the mentioned guns and found they all have strengths and weaknesses depending on what your doing with them.

Good Luck,
Doug

There are a lot of the older fixed choke O/Us out there within that price range. I traded a Citori some time back for a RL with screw in chokes because I use mine as an all around gun and the fixed chokes didn't cover the applications I needed. 9 months later it is still sitting on the dealers shelf along with a couple of others and the price is slowly dropping. Once you go double you won't look back.
Just another worthless opinion!!

If there happens to be an old Galyans now Dicks store by you, hurry and go look.  They are selling theire guns cheap because they are closing the stores.  Saw someone buy a Beretta today for $437 off the normal price.  Hope this might help you.

The fit and finish on my Red Label is outstanding, and there is nothing that shakes, rattles or is loose. Mine shoots and looks great. You can spend a bunch more money on an O/U, but you won't get a better gun.

I've got a buddy that is a goose guide and he put nothing but a very steady supply of 3"hevi-shot through his Ruger and has had no trouble that I know of. I'm getting one next year. Here's another fun option with that much money to spend. Get one each of every guage H&R topper. You won't impress anyone but you'll have a blast.
