30-06 Handi Recoil?
« on: January 02, 2005, 07:07:32 AM »
I'm thinking about buying a .223 for target shooting and varmint hunting, but I also want to buy another barrel for deer season.  I'm thinking either .270 or 30-06.  I'd much rather get a 30-06, but I'd like to know how the recoil is with this.  How hard will a 30-06 beat me up?

PA90Ranger:

Welcome Aboard.. :D

The 30-06 won't beat you up as much as you would think...it does have some kick to it...but as long as you have it in the pocket of your shoulder..it won't hurt ya...and having a soft comb on top of the butt stock will reduce it even more...I use a Uncle Mike's neoprene sheel holder with a small piece of ruba-tx foam under it...takes all the cheek slap out of it...and this is where a-lot of the percieved recoil comes from...and if your still getting to much from the shoulder..you can have a Limb-Saver recoil pad...or a Triple Magnum Decelorator pad fitted by most gunsmiths...

The 270 is a great cartridge...and can cover most if not all of your lower 48 states hunting too...it has a good choice of premium and non-premium bullets to choose from...not as many as the 30-06...but quite a few...as does a great job on just about anything...

Both cartridgs are great...that's why I have both :-D  :-D  Welcome to the wonderfull world of becoming a  Handi-holic.....

:D , Welcome aboard PA90Ranger, quick question, why do you need such a big gun for deer if you are concerned (and rightly so) about recoil? A 7mm-08, .308, .280 or even a nice handloaded 30-30 (factory ammo will do fine also) will kill any deer you might ever see in PA and also where I hunt in Maine. I have gotten a dressed out 201 pound 8 point and there is no way it would have walked away from any of the above cartridges. I shot him with a .35 Remington years ago and many here are loading the .357 Mag and .357 Max to .35 Remington values and getting many deer with them. Of course there is always my favorite, the 45-70 Handirifle!!!....<><....

I'm leaning towards the 30-06 basically because of the extremely broad variety of ammo available today.  I also want to go this route because I may use it for other large game as well.  I shoot a .308 already for deer with no complaints, but I'd like something that packs a little more punch.  Thanks for the help guys.

Ranger, I have both a .308 and a 30-06, your not going to see a lot of difference unless you reload and even then not that much, but if it's what you want the 30-06 beats out the .308 for versatility and power if only by a bit....<><....

:idea3:  - Check out the post ".270 or .308" in this same thread for a lot of good info that may help you decide, I think you have a great deer round in that .308. But, if you want more power and a lot of fun, get a 45-70 Handi!!! Then you could shoot Buffalo, Any bear there is, and with the right ammo, Elephant and Rhino!!! as well as loading it down with a patched round ball and shoot squirrels and rabbits with it!!!....<><....

I hunted almost exclusively with the synthetic Handi in 30-06 this year and took both the deer I shot at. I use Winchester 150 gr. Power Points and don't have a problem with recoil. I'm small and the 30-06 is no problem for me. Would likely be different with hot loads, but I don't reload. My combination does not punish me at all.

30-06 sounds good to me.  I'm a decent sized guy so the recoil shouldn't be a big deal from what you guys are telling me.  Plus I'll be using the wood stock so that adds a little bit of weight.  Thanks again for your help guys.

Here's a recoil table to make some comparisons.

my new handi '06 does not slap my cheek like the one i had about 10 years ago. whether it's a slight change in stock configuration or a different recoil pad with a softer compound, or slightly higher scope mounts, or a combination of the three, i can't tell you. all i know is that as a 53-year-old dude who doesn't want to get beat up, my new handi is a dandy. stock configuration is the key to most recoil situations in standard weight hunting rifles chambered for deer-capable or larger cartridges.

Any one that has MS Excel on their computer can use my program to calculate their individual rifle and load. Very simple to use.
Send me an e-mail and I send you the program The program is not usable
on this or any other site. My platform is Windows 98.

Go with the 30-06. I don't think you can find a better all around caliber. Recoil shouldn't be an issue but if it is a Sims recoil pad will solve that.

My 30-06 Handi has no more recoil than my .308 Parker-Haile.  The main reason I like the 06 is that it is adiquate for anything in North America.  The bear minimum for the big bears, but it works.  With my 06 i'm ready for anything close or far.  I have a Shepard 6X18 scope on it, and I can hit consistantly out to 600 yards.  At 250 yards three shot groups are clover leafs.  This last fall I killed a nice Caribou and a Moose with my 06.  The Caribou was shot at 200 yards, and the Moose was shot at 250 yards.  One shot each with a 180gr Nosler Partition.  I take this same rifle to Tennessee to hunt with my Dad and Brothers.  I also take it to Texas to hunt with another brother and friends.  I'm a great fan of the 30-06.
