Brit Grenade Mortar
« on: January 02, 2005, 04:09:13 AM »
This is a bronze British grenade mortar.  The tube is cast and then machine turned.  The bore is about 2.25 inchs (raquet ball size) with a powder chamber that will hold up to about 150 grains.  The bed is oak and based on the coehorn morter drawings in Muller's Treatise on Artillery and Peterson's Round Shot and Rammers.

The bed is 13X9 and about 2.5 inches thick.  The handles are hand forged iron.

The motar is designed to lob hand grenades about 200 - 300 yards and was mainly a naval weapon.  I've only fired raquet balls in it in my back yard, both plain and sand filled.  It will put a plain ball into orbit and the tube will "ring" when it goes off.

I think that was a low orbit - seems like it was about 30 feet above the ground when it whistled through the trees in our neighborhood.

What a toy!  That certainly is a possibility for one of my chunks of CRS 5.25" in diameter!  Although to cut out 90% of the weight is a LOT of machine time.

Hmmm - raquet-ball caliber.

I wonder what a SuperBall would do?

When it lands, I'll bet that first bounce will be insane!!!

What is the Diameter of a POOL TABLE BALL?
I could have a good supply of them.

Pool balls ar ok, but you have to call your shots.

I can remember being stationed at Fort Devens, MA when in ASA.  At some point one of the officer classes put a set of pool balls in the pack howitzer used to fire the morning salute for reveille.  They were discovered (after the fact) and took up a collection for all the windows (buildings) and windshields that were taken out.

I'm sure that there is a standard size AND a commercial professional organization regulating that size - somewhere, as there is regulating the size of bowling balls.
