Is the 1400 trash?? I recently bought one. I have not shot it yet.
Field & Stream just came out with their "50 greatest guns of all time" , and as a side blurb, they listed a few of the worst, including the Win. 1400.
If anyone has had one here for years and years, I would like to know what kind of service it has given them. Thanks for any feedback.

My dad bought me a 20 ga. model 1400 in the mid-70s. It was my first
auto-loading shotgun. 28" vent rib barrel, modified choke. I still have it today. I have hunted about any kind of small game, upland birds etc. that you can imagine. It has been my primary dove gun all these years. I have found that as long as I keep it clean it performs without any problems.

I have the economical version the 140 since around 82 and have hunted and used it for trap and skeet quite a bit early on since it was my only shot gun. I haven't had any problems with it, it's not as nice as some others but I think I payed 115.00 for it and it had the win choke system to boot.

I bought mine new in the 70s and never had a problem.
Still shooting it today. Never had a jam.

I think it's reputation took a beatin' because IIRC
it was the first model of the "post-1964" Winchesters.

QUESTION!!

I got the barrel back from the gunsmith. It was 28", and is now 27 1/4" with a very nice centered bead. It is gauged to be improved cylinder which is fine for clays & birds.
I have refinished the aluminum reciever , refinished the wood as well. My question is does the 1400 have a bolt buffer between the bolt and the back of the reciever like the Remington 58? There is a machined hole in the very back of the reciever that looks as if it would hold some type of buffer, but it did not come with one. I can see the imprints of the bolt on the very back of the reciever where it has made contact. Am I missing something or should I go ahead and reassemble. Thanks for any help. Will post pics soon.

my 1300 has such a buffer...i would think the 1400 would too since it has much more of a need for one. try numrich's website and see if they list a part number for one.
