Scope and mount??
« on: January 03, 2005, 07:22:12 AM »
I purchased a RWS Model 46 in .22 and was wondering what mount and which schope to put on it. It will be used for informal 10m paper punching and some small game hunting (birds maybe a rabitt or two). I want a decent scope that doesn't break the bank and can stand up to the recoil. Was thinking 3 x9 or 4 x 12. Thanks for looking

Scope-wise, check out BSA; they have the powers you specified, and they are not "wallet busters."  As for mounts, check out RWS's scope mount at Cabela's :
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jhtml?id=0024322226410a&type=product&cmCat=search&returnString=No=60&hasJS=true&Nty=1&Ntx=matchall&Ntt=scope+mounts&N=4887&QueryText=scope+mounts&noImage=0&_D%3AhasJS=+&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fsearch%2Fsearch-box.jhtml.8&Ntk=Products&_D%3A%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=+&%2Fcabelas%2Fcommerce%2FCabelasCatalogNumberFinder.giftCertificateURL=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Ftemplates%2Fgiftcertificate%2Fgiftcertificate.jhtml%3Fid%3D0005586990011a%26podId%3D0005586%26catalogCode%3DIB%26navAction%3Djump%26indexId%3D&returnPage=search-results1.jhtml

I know it's one heck of a URL (thank God for "copy" and "paste" :)  :-D), but I have those on my RWS 350, and the scope ( also a BSA) and mounts have held up quite well.  The rings that come with it also are designed to reduce torque when tightening the screws, thereby helping to prevent the scope from turning inside the rings when tightening.  I believe your gun would also have a dove-tail mount as well.  The mount is designed for them.  Good luck with your rifle.

If the URL does not work, let me know here.  It should though, I tested it more than twice and it works.

30.06 abolt,

Like 'Patriot' said the BSA will work nicely without breaking your wallet.  Go to http://www.bsaoptics.com/productlist.asp?ID=11&Cat_Name=airrifle22.jpg&Cat_Code=AR&Cat_Type=RFAM to check them out.  I have their AR 3-12X44mm A/O T.T on my Tech Force 99M and my son in-law has the same on his RWS 350M.  I also know a few guys that have them on noted scope killers like the RWS 48 & 52.  As for mounts/rings go with good ones.  I recommend the Double Strap from BKL or Beeman 5030 in either medium or high depending on the objective bell on the scope you buy.  Stay away from B-Square products.  You’ll be happier if you do.  Lawdog

Lawdog,

Those mounts/bases I suggested are RWS brand; they are not associated with B-Square, are they?  I know it seems like a strange question, but I don't know who's manufacturing for who out there.

Patriot,

Take the RWS rings and set them side by side with the B-Square and they sure look alike.  They may be made by someone else(RWS doesn't make them) and by whom I don't know.  All I know is that B-Square has it's problems and you'll be happier if you stay away from them.  Lawdog

If you are referring to the RWS C-mounts, they are quite similiar to the B-square mounts. Both are something to steer clear off. Stick with the BKL or Beeman mounts. Those flimsy adjustables are nothing but problems, require lots of tinkering and fiddling, and won't hold a zero for long. They do make a good paperweight though.

OK I knew they looked quite familiar after I stared at them for awhile.  I was going to suggest they looked alike (the rings), but I was recalling from memory, not an actual picture.

Dave, I know what you mean now.  When I first put it on the 350, it worked fine.  After a few shots though, it ended up shooting wacky; I knew somethin' was loose as I heard and felt somethin' moving and rattling in the base area.  It turned out the setting screws or whatever they are that allow the rings to turn (the windage feature I assume), as well as the actual base were loosened slightly.  I was, shall we say frustrated, and made sure they wouldnt come loose again.  So I tightened them up real good, and they haven't seemed to let up yet.  Either way, I'm not sure I would want to stick with them; I do like one thing though, and that is the ring design.  I didn't have to worry much about the scope turning in the rings as I tightened the screws.  Maybe that is a bad feature???

Someone know where would be a good place to look up the mounts Lawdog stated?

heh heh, its kind of funny, I made sure they were tight alright; I was truely on the verge of stripping out the hex-wrench socket on the screws.  The hex-wrench was "jumping" inside the socket as I tightened them hard.  Remember, this was for the windage feature on the rings, not the actual screws that hold the scope.....maybe shouldn't have done that...Maybe I shouldn't have to go that far to have a reliable and rock solid base/mounts either.

I finally got the RWC C mounts to work right on my model 48. It took carefully lapping the rings, lock-tite on all the screws, an upgrade screw kit from Airguns Express & a bit of tape around the scope.
I was about to toss the C mount until recently.
The elevation adjustment helps w/ RWS. The barrel seems to have a bit of droop that needs to be compensated for.
I have the RWS 3-12x AO scope. Good scope made in Korea(mount too).
About $150 I think.

Hey I think BKL is an advertiser right here on GB.  After reading several good posts about them I bought 2 sets, 1 for my BSA rifle (14mm dovetail rail) and 1 for my other 3/8 /11mm rail guns.  They ARE very NICE. I've used the BSA set and they held a 4-12 Swift very well and with no mount marks at all. My only concern is that the rings are quite high - but that can be an advantage in some cases.  Haven't installed the other set as I've been switching scopes and sights around among several guns.

I ordered my BKL mounts direct online and they came quick.

Another decent mount is the Beeman - I have the 2 piece with 4 screws per ring and 2 dovetail grip screws each. Got mine from Cabela's a few years ago.

Take a look at the 6-18X40AO Simmons Pro-Air for a scope, I have 2 and use them on rimfires.

Most any cheap scope will work just fine on a rimfire.  The Pro Air from Simmons hasn't got the best reputation on magnum springer air rifles.  The double recoil just tears them up.  Seen it happen.  Lawdog
