If I was to buy a used barrel could I shoot it without a smth looking at it first?

Yes and no, It must be the proper reciever (SB2 or SB1) and it must fit the reciever. Stay around and ask whatever you want, there are many here to help. We all started by asking questions, and that is the BEST and safest way to start. Good Luck. I have a 223 ultra with a standard barrel and want to buy a 7mm08
barrel for it if I I can find one.

Yes, that swap can be done safely on your reciever, both the .223 and 7mm-08 barrels are not preceeded by an asterick in the barrel accessory list so they can be safely fitted and fired on the same reciever. Now just find one and buy it and we will walk you through the fitting process. If you can buy with the option to try it for fit first thats great, otherwise don't worry about it, buy it for a reasonable price and try it on your reciever, if it is one of those extremely rare ones that are not capabe of being fitted to your gun just sell it to someone else who's gun it may fit better. After you get a barrel post again and many here will help you through the fitting process. You might try a WTB (want to buy) in the clasifieds...Good Luck....<><.... :grin:

Just curious tjf76, do you not want to buy one from NEF? I can understand wanting to save some $$$ but its really easy to send the reciever in and have a new barrel fitted. 8)

I would have to agree with Bob, unless you wanted the barrel in a caliber that is no longer available the easiest route to take (though not necessarily the cheapest) is to get it threw the factory.

In addition to the benefit of getting the factory fitted barrel you also get the full factory warranty.

That said, if money is tight and you are mechanically inclined you may be able to save about 1/3 the cost of a factory barrel if you can find a good deal on a used one and fit it yourself.

Personally I'm of the opinion that it is just as economical and more beneficial to search the used gun racks at your local gun shops and pawn shops for a complete gun in the caliber you want.  I've heard of some amazing deals.

I just didn't want to wait 4-6weeks. After looking at the website again
the price is good and cant find a used one anyway, NEF here I come.
