Light Load .44 with Unique ?
« on: February 06, 2005, 07:05:14 AM »
Well I tried 9.5gr. of Unique under 240gr. SJSP
Seems to what all Suggest for a light accurate load (NOT).
One group was better than 4" and the other group, 3 shot's on paper
and 3 missing.
These were shot at 50yd.
No it is not me, My heavy load now stay's at 2" and under.
Is this a load for Cast bullets only.
Failure is not an option

Light Load .44 with Unique ?

hylander,
I have tried time and again to make Unique shoot well in just about everything that I own!  Now then, it may be sacrilege to say this, but Unique simple does not work at all for me with the exception of one load I shoot in my Model '92 Marlin in 32 Long Colt cartridge.
Unique is always touted to be a great all around powder for just about everything...Nope not for me.
I do shoot 7.0 grains of Green Dot and a 265 grain Kieth bullet (923 fps) in my 44 Magnum that is a 1.0" shooter at 50 yards.  (A 'scoped SRH)  Don't know about Green Dot and the 240 jacketed bullet, but it might be worth checking data to see if it is recommended.  Good-luck...BCB

Have to agree with BCB on the Unique. Never had much luck with it and don't care for the unburnt crap. Like in your other post, try some of the other powders in that burn range. SR4756, SR7625, WW231, WW Super Field, Longshot, AA#7,
HS7, ect.
The only Alliant powder I care for is STEEL in the shotgun.  All the others seem to leave a bunch of crap in the bbl. I just tried some R15 in my 338 JDJ and same thing, bunch of crud in the bbl.

I don't like Unique either;

But for a different reason, I've got a Hornady powder measure and that darn Unique will bridge over in the hopper.  :x  And that happens about every third or fourth case. It just won't meter worth a crap!  :x
I'll use any other powder before I use Unique. I hate the stuff.

light load for 44 mag.

i have tried 8.5 to 9.7 of unique under a lee swc 240 gr. tl bullet and all would do 2' or better @ 25 yds. at 9.5 gr. and with my eyes i could get 2.5 " @ 50 yds.  i was shooting a taurus m44 ss 6" cci lp's these light loads are very sensitive to variations in powder weigth and measure at lease every other charge.
if its worth doing, finish it!

Try 6.8 of Unique underr the cast 240 grainer.  Too light for jacketed bullets, but has been an accurate load in different 44 Mag's I knwo of and is also my 45 Colt plinking load.

I've used 9.0 gr. Unique w/250 gr. Cast 429421 for years in both of my .44's. 12 Shots(twice around the cyl) in the Ruger Hunter shoots 1.2, and the same number shoots 1.5 in the Mod.29 S&W(both at 25 yds in a ransom rest). I've never tried Unique with jacketed bullets because there are better powders for that, like 2400, Win. 296, H-110, Lil-gun. That 9.0 gr. unique load has probably accounted for 100+ groundhogs over the years out to 100yds or a little more. Actually I almost never use jacketed bullets anymore, The 429421 at 1050fps, and a 429244GC at 1400fps do everything I need to do with a .44mag. You should try some goodcast bullets before you give up on Unique. And if you think Uhique is dirty, don't ever buy a .410 shotgun they'll make you forget a few flakes of Unique in a pistol. So what your going to clean it when your done anyway![/u]

Unique in the 44

For years I have used 10.6 grains of Unique under a cast 240 grain bullet in 44 Mag cases for my S&W M29.  This runs over the chronograph at 1000 fps from the 6.5 inch barrel.  perhaps it is a bit stiffer than you had in mind, but on the other hand it fills the case better which probably reduces the variability.
