Trailside--What's this part for??

:? I have only limited experience with semi-auto pistols.  What is the little black "button" that sticks out of the back of the slide?  It's not a chamber loaded indicator--I know that.  It also doesn't decock.  I can't find anything in the manual about it.  It's driving me nuts!

The little black button that hangs out the back of your slide is the internal hammer that strikes your firing pin.
