Hey guys, newbie post with Mannlicher stock question.
« on: January 06, 2005, 07:47:25 PM »
 newbie here, but I have been to three State Fairs and a couple of hog-killin's.

Got a question for somebody smarter'n me.  I have heard that Handi's could be had with a full Mannilcher stock in days past before Marlin took over.  Older serial numbers and no barrel exchange program.

I've found one in 45/70 with a "NK" serial number.

Is this a newer "Marlin" NEF? Maybe with an older forearm?

Might I be able to get a different barrel for this gun and still use the Mannlicher forearm?  I think the N serial numbers are recent.  Correct?

Wouldn't that be cool?

Also, what's the best caliber for making a 12 point buck walk by MY tree stand?

Don't you love THOSE questions?

I've been reading for weeks.  Lots of good advice and tips.

Bwana,
Welcome to GBO.  Home of the handiholics.  Yes there was a full mannlicher stock model made a few years back.  Don't think they have been made for several years, but the stocks may fit later models.  Don't remember the calibers but according to the "K" in your serial number it should have been a 1994 model, if I figured correctly.  "U" is 2004, start up the alphabet backwards till you get to your "K".  That should tell you the model year.  I don't think you can participate in NEF's barrel accessory program, because I think your action is a "low pressure" type.  Do some searches on this topic.  Nowdays, the low pressure actions are the shotgun and some low pressure centerfire rifles.  They are the SB-1 actions.  All the other high pressure actions are SB-2, like the 7-08, 06, 308, etc.  Can't help you on the other questions.

Howdy Bwana, welcome to the forum.

Measure the distance from the back of the hinge pin notch in the barrel lug to the center of the forearm mounting stud.  If that measurement is 4-1/2" (give or take a sixteenth) that stock should work on a newer barrels.

I have always liked a manlicher style stocked rifle.  I have thought that a handirifle would look good with a manlicher style forend.  Does anyone make an aftermarket forened?  I looked on Gunstaocks Inc and they do not.  How would you attach one to the barrel end?  Usually some type of barrel band is required.  Any ideas?
