Anyone Suggest a Suitable Powder Recommendation?
« on: January 05, 2005, 06:08:11 AM »
What, if any powder, might give good performance in the 25-06, 7mm-08, and 30-06? I'm presently loading my 30-06 with Win 748 but it gives mediocre accuracy for me and I also want to start loading 25-06 and 7mm-08. I have been considering IMR 4895 but would like to see if there are any better propellants or even if 4895 will give good performance in all 3 calibers.

4350 is your best bet. 4895 is too fast for the .25-06 with any but the lightest bullets.

There may be one of the newer powders that will work, but I'm an old timer and have stuck with what I know.

Have you given H4350 a try?  From what I read, it gives excellent performance and accuracy in 30-06-type cases.  I'm sure that would include the 7mm-08.

For 25-06 I figure IMR or H4831 would be a good start.  Maybe RL 22, these are the three powders that I see most often used with 25-06 shooters.

If you are wanting a powder to work in all three, then I'd try either IMR or Hogdon 4350.  I use IMR 4350 in 30-06 with outstanding accuracy and my Dad uses H4350.  The Hogdon version isn't as temperature sensative and from user's feedback isn't as large grained as the IMR version.  Good luck.

I'd have to second the recomendations that H-4350 should work the best in all three. The Hogdon version is their newer "extreme" powder, not at all temp. sensitive  and "short cut" to meter better. If that dosen't work, try Alliant RL-19, or Norma 203.

I like H4895 but also a few others not mentioned, that have served well for me. Hogdons Varget is a really good powder as well, I have worked up some very accurate a stout loads for my 30/06 Rem.
I have only used it on 25/06 & 30/06 also some of my big bores tend to like it, tight groups is the bottom line, don't worry about the power range, its all good for hunting purposes, look for accuracy.Using my 243Win I noticed Hornady 100gr Interlock sp/bt liked IMR 7828/RL19, very accurate using heavy bullets. The best way to find out what your rifle likes is to work some loads up, and see what produces the tightest groups.
every rifle is different, even of the same type and brand, don't matter, Its all to do with the barrel. good luck. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

The 4350's are certainly good in those guns. I have had good luck with WW 760 in all three guns as well. I think 4895 will be too fast for the .25 and the .30

Everyone like something different, I've had excellent accuracy in all the calibers you've listed with H4895. Happens to be my favorite rifle powder, only thing you lose is some velocity.  I use H4895 exclusively in my 7mm WSM.
