Bushnell Trophy or Banner
« on: January 05, 2005, 01:12:36 PM »
I just bought my first Handi in .223 and now I need to put a scope on it.  I only want to spend about $100 on the scope itself and I'm pretty set on a Bushnell.  My problem is would I be better off putting a Trophy 3-9 on it or a Banner 4-12AO.  I like the higher power of the Banner but the Trophy just seems a little bit nicer.  Is the Trophy worth giving up the extra magnification?  I haven't bought a Bushnell in quite a while so I don't know what the big differences are between the two models.  Thanks for any advice you may have.

i have a 6-18X50AO Banner on my .223 and i love it. the 6-18 banner is a light gathering fool. i've never looked through the 4-12 banner, but i've heard that it surprisingly doesn't gather as much light as the 6-18. i really like mine, the view is super clear and bright. i couldn't ask for any better. but, that's just my humble opinion. in case you didn't know, wal-mart sells the 6-18 banner for $130 and most stores stock it. hope this helps

I like the 6X18X50  very much also,if I've got a little moonlight I can spot a coyote at 300 yds.with it. This scope is the very best I've used in lowlight conditions. I liked it so much I ordered another one from Midway, and it was $119 total.  Digger

Alex,
You might want to try this as an alternative. I've been keeping my eye out for good buys on used scopes at some of my local gun dealers. A lot of times guys will trade a rifle in wearing a nice scope, and most dealers are willing to sell them separately. Used scopes don't hold their original value any better than my cars do. I picked up a used Swift 6-18x44 AO for $50, Cabelas sells the same scope new for $209. Just know what your looking at before buying. Check the mechanics of the scope, look for lens scratches, loose parts, in general play with it a little bit. If they carry lifetime warranties, it can always be fixed for free, no matter who the original owner was. You may even want to carry a Cabelas catalog with you to look up the scopes price, warranty, and other features. Good luck!
Don

I didn't know there was a 6-18AO available at Walmart, but then again I never really looked there.  Just another option I suppose, but I'm starting to lean towards the banner.  But now my problem is 6-18 or 4-12.  I plan on using it for hunting chucks, varmints, and a fair amount of target shooting.  Which would best suit my needs?

Check prices with GBO advertisers Optic Zone and SWFA before spending your money at Wal-Mart. You might save money and support this site and help keep it here for you to enjoy. Supporting GBO advertisers and letting them know you're supporting them because they are GBO advertisers helps me keep this forum running for you.

My .223s just don't seem to reach out well, at least not to my liking.  I originally had a 6X18 Bushnell on my .223 Handi.  After much shooting I decided a 3X9 was adiquate for that round it just does not reach out beyond 250 yards well.  I put the 6X18 on a .243 Handi.

Go with the trophy and you wont be sorry for the money you spend.  I got one just this week.  It was what the budget would support, but after getting it, I would buy another if need be.  Talk to the foks at Bushnell about the difference in the banner and the trophy.  Excellent folks to help you. They actually act like they care,  very rare these days.

Greybeards right about The Optic Zone, I ordered 3 3.8X12 Simmons Atec's for $129 each delivered. For a 223 the 6X18X50 Banner would be perfect.  Digger

I'd recommend you check out the Banner and Trophy at SWFA, they've got good prices and excellent customer service, will offer good advice. Give em a call, they'll price match anyone.

...Ranger,
I have a Bushnell Trophy in 3-9x40 that I think is a pretty nice scope. better than the Banner.  You generally can find them for under $100.  You will be hard pressed to find a cheaper price than the Optic Zone has on any scope.  Another one that several of us here have is the Simmons ATV.  It was made a few years ago by Simmons and is a pretty darn good scope.  It is 4.5-14x40 and has fully multi coated optics.  There are still a few floating around new.  Natchez SS had some recently for $79.  I have two and could not be happier with them.

Sounds like you guys are mostly pushin for the Trophy and I have to agree.  I was lookin at one at Gander Mt when I bought the rifle and I really liked it.  It was very clear and the adjustments on it worked very smoothly.  I'm gonna have to go with the Trophy here.  Thanks for the advice guys.
