Savage Model 30 Stevens .22 impressions?

Anyone have one of these guns?  What are your impressions of it.  Whats the L.O.P.?  Im a big guy at 6'4" and have been eyeballin this little gun.  Ive kinda been bitten by the singleshot bug and am looking for a little single shot companion to the Ruger 10/22.

I don't have one but I have been looking at them.  I have an original Favorite and the stocks on the Model 30 are longer than the originals.  The originals are "boys rifles" and I would expect you would have to trim the stock for a youngster.   I would guess 13-13 1/2".  I like the take down model which comes with a scope mount as well.  They are very light, less than 5 # and are only a yard long overall.  The wood is pretty decent for an inexpensive rifle.  I wish they would make the .22 with a full octagon barrel.  Will probably have to get one to round out the collection.

I have been waiting for them to bring this gun out in 17 HMR. I think that they have now done that so will be time for a new plinker soon.  POW

The Savage website has the 17HMR version listed.  I think I even read a review of it, but not sure.  It looks like a neat little gun.  As long as the L.O.P. aint too bad then I might just add one to the collection.  The Ruger 10/22 L.O.P. is about the shortest I care to go considering my size.  As I said Ive jinda been bitten by the single shot bug, and the old falling block style of guns just stir me (every time I flip through the Cabelas shooters guide and see the Quigly sharps and its price I sob  :) .)

New Hampshire you can always add a recoil pad to the rifle though it surely does not need it. You will increase LOP by 1"+ by doing so. Though not needed they do not look out of place on any rifle. POW

I managed to set my hands upon the 17HMR version at the local gun shop.  I was impressed.  A bit smaller than I thought it would be, but it still looks and feels pretty cool to me.  But they wanted an outrageous price of (around) $350  :eek: .  I think the MSRP is ONLY about $250.  I may chaeck with the other local shop and see what kind of price I can get on the 22 version.  If its still around $350 I may just suck it up, add some cash and get a Contender.

P.S. Prince, good idea.  The LOP on the one I handled actually wasnt too bad so it may not be needed.

 My local dealer is selling the synthetic stocked version for under $200! In fact when I looked at one earlier this summer they were $179. I'd say your dealer is a bit unscrupulous at $350.

Probably going in "the wrong direction" for you (i.e., less practical & more expensive), but, if you like the "old timey" things like a Quigley, you might want to look at the Winchester Lo Wall .22 (this year in .17, I think).  1885-type falling block, 1/2-octagon 1/2-round barrel,  tang sights. Anyway, a cute gun ... if a little fancy & expensive.

Dang, thanks to someone posting the list on the NEF Shotgun forum I found the little Savage for $185.  The lsit is....GASP.....Wal-Marts!  I can simply print the page, take it to the Wal-Mart down the street, and they will order it for me.  Now we are getting somewheres.  The only down side?  Well its Wal-Mart, thats the down side  :grin: .

This thread is a bit old but since I noticed that Rifle Magazine has recently published an article on the Savage single shot in 17 HMR I thought i would bring it up. Very interesting and positive accumulation of facts in the article and reccomend that anyone than can read it. POW

I bought one of them last year in .22 Mag.  I have used it to teach my grandson how to shoot.  It is also nice to take along when just wandering around in the woods.  At first I found it a bit "uncomfortable" as it is so small and light, but I quickly got used to it and find it a fun gun for plinking.  It is plenty accurate.
