The letter designation were model changes made by Winchester. Some changes were made to the triggers. A lot has been written and the 52's are very popular as collectables and shooters. Herbert G. Houze has written a book "The Winchester Model 52". He has whole chapters on B and C rifles.  :?

Serial numbers were followed by the letter A after 38,000. Between 38,000 and 48,000 the letter B followed. Between 48,000 and 75,000 the letter C follows. After around 81,000 the letter D follows. As mentioned above, many changes took place with the different series.
