Old type Winchester Silvertips (Not Silver Ballistic Tips)
« on: February 03, 2003, 09:01:17 AM »
Other than gun shows and ebay, anyone know of any vendors that still sell the old silver tips as acomponent?

What exactly were they designed to do?  I have just about 10 of them that I pulled from some old .32 Remington.  I was just wondering what is the best use for them.

I'm not sure, but didn't Winchester claim that the old Silver-Tip bullets were good for controlled expansion?

The ones I remember were favored by lever-action .30-30 shooters because the tips resisted battering in the tubular magazines.

I have been using the old Winchester Silvertips for over 30 years on whitetails. I load them in my .308 and .30-30.  I have never had a problem with them expanding. I feel that it is just a great bullet, that is why when I heard that Winchester was going to discontinue the design I purchased a couple of thousand of them.

I have a box left that I shoot through my .32win special, they are 170gr and have been great on deer.  I'm not sure what they were advertised to do, but from experience I can say that they control expansion better than federal softpoints, and they do hold their shape better in the tubular magazine.  Wish I could find some more. I plan on using them on bear this fall.

TAZ

I bought a bunch of the old style 140 grain boattail silvertips from Lock, Stock, and Barrel for the .270.  A good price.  Last time I checked they were out of the 140, 270's.

You can find them on the web.
