I don't have one yet but am thinking of getting one. How hot can it be loaded ? Can it use the Ruger #1 loads or the Marlin loads? Thanks

Your shoulder will give out before the Handi-Rifle will.

Just stay within SAMMI specs when loading and follow ONLY printed data when reloading.

If you want to order Buffalo Bore or Garrett ammo for the Handi-Rifle it will handle it no problem.

BTW: I still have a Ulta model with a 22" barrel in 45-70 w/scope for sale.

I have had one guy contact me already and am waiting on his answer. It is also posted in the Classified Section.

It will handle above what the Marlin will handle, just depends on what the shooter's shoulder can handle! Low level 3 loads are possible but need to be worked up slowly as each rifle is different. Some shooters here are shooting 2300fps 300 & 350gr loads with no problems other than sore shoulders....I've shot 350gr loads at 2100fps with great accuracy and acceptable recoil with a good recoil pad and some lead in the stock bolt hole.

I have 350 gr loads at 2300fps, 300gr at 2500, and 405gr loads at 2100 fps that I shoot out of my Handi-Rifle.
These are the level 3 loads taken directly from the Hodgdon manual for 2004.
They all kick like an angry mule out of my rifle, but are accurate.
These loads in my 45-70 are actually worse in the recoil department than my 10lb CZ550 Safari Magnum in 458 Lott !
My rifle shows no signs on the cases of over-pressure with these loads.
Your rifle may be different, so work your loads up carefully.

My son uses the lever loading material from the Speer Manual. These loads work well, the 300gr is his favorite. His 400gr loads that he uses for bears recoils about like my .338 Win Mag.

Do a littel research on the 450 Marlin, loads and pressures for it, and then think about the fact that NEF chambers the 450 Marlin too! There is no question in my mind that the Handi will handle class 3 loads with aplomb, it will even take a steady diet of it. For myself, I find 400 grianers ar 1400-1500 to be all the recoil I care to deal with. At 1700 fps, 400 grainers give you more than just a wake up nudge. However, if you enjoy heavy recoil and can't tell if you pulled the trigger unless you teeth rattle, then a heavily loaded handi is just up your alley

i agree with the last reply. load the 45-70,405gr to around 1400 fps and it is a joy to shoot. :grin:

You can load any level #2 load for it...Hogdon's Annual shows all 3 different loads as well...my favorite 45-70 load is a 300 grain Nosler partiton @ 2300 fps...in a Handi...it will thump you...but the results on anything you shoot with it will amaze you...for cast bullets...have a look at the Cast Performance 405 grain WLNGC bullets...they do very good as well...iffin your into cast bullets... :wink:

Thanks, for all the help and concern for my shoulder. At this point it was just curiosity I still have to convince my wife I "need" another gun. Montanan that's a nice looking gun but it will be a while before I win this debate.
