factory added Muzzle break or Magna Port
« on: January 10, 2005, 07:44:41 AM »
I'd like to thank everyone for all your advise.  I have narrowed down my choice on my first Thompson Center to the Encore frame.  I am still thinking about my first two barrels.

I was thinking about muzzle breaks and wanted to get your opinion on the factory add on breaks versus have the barrel Magna ported?

Also does the 7mm-08 need a break?

Thanks

I use Mag-na-port. I have been extremely pleased with all the work they have done for me over the years. Exellent people to deal with.
I don't think that the mag-na-port will take quite as much recoil out of a gun as a brake will, but it does not increase the noise level like a brake does. I would say it's a trade off on which is more important to you.

got a 15" 7-08 that i wouldn't want a brake on. recoil is very tolerable. but....people are different, and if you are recoil sensitive, or want to shoot with it all day, or in competition, then maybe a brake would help ya.
a brake will add much more noise, and be louder.

havn't tried magna-port.

OTT(on target technologies) makes a screw on muzzle brake. you could even take it off and use a cap to cover the threads. i have the OTT "shark gill" brake on my 300 win mag encore handgun. very nice!

I prefer the muzzle brake over magna-port.

Also, I think that most people would not find the need for a brake on a 7mm-08 Encore w/ Scope.

I have barrels with brakes and that are magn-ported. For me, they are about the same. In a 15" 7-08, recoil is very managable, IMHO, a brake is not needed.

I have the Muzzle tamer on my 14" 44 mag Hunter barrel and don't like it. I had the Hunter barrel in 7-30 waters and made a trade with Ed's contenders to get the regular 14" barrel. Good decision. No one wants to be near you at the range when you are shooting with a brake. I don't like the braked barrel for hunting either. I put my left hand on a large tree and layed the forearm of the Contender across my wrist. When I fire with the muzzle tamer ,it blew dust from the treebark in my eyes.     That's when I decided to get a regular barrel !  8)
