I shot some Ultramax .223 and....
« on: January 11, 2005, 10:35:48 AM »
This is some good stuff.  Shot the 55gr sp and it seems to me to shoot a tad better in my 223 bull than the 45 gr jhp that Winny is putting out.  I like the versatility of the Soft point also.  At 100 yds they do group very well.  didnt measure the group, but it was tight!!
Ultramax seems to be a good .223 ammo for the money. 50rds was 12.00 at cabelas.  I did shoot some of thier 308 stuff and was not near as impressed with it as the .223 ammo.
Any others have experience with it??

I shot a few of those Ultramax 55 sp (mooched a few while out shooting) and had about the same results as you did. They made a nice group. The only thing I have heard bad about Ultramax is that they are slow. Not a big deal if you aren't shooting 300 yards all the time.

I've been shooting the Black Hills 52 lately and they show some promise. It is also very clean burning, not that the Ultramax is dirty stuff.

I have not tried the Black hilss, but I hear good stuff.  That may be next on the list of ammo in my quest for the PERFECT off the shelf ammo.  Not that the JHP 45 is bad stuff.

Anybody know what the velocity is for the Black Hills 52gr? I'm going to try it next; the Ultramax 40gr V-Max groups as well or better than the Win white box stuff, but it's listed at 3280fps and would like to try something faster. Both are equal at 100yds for me - about 1.5" high - but the Win is hitting a bit higher at 200yds than the Ultramax. But I do like the way those v-max bullets explode when they hit something! Going to have to get into reloading just so I can have it all, I guess... :P

I have chronographed some of the WW econo box 45 JHP stuff thru my 223 UVarm.  It averaged about 3,450 or so, and is very accurate.  It is advertised at 3,600.  However the same WW 45 JHP in 22-250 chronographed at 4,050-4,095 thru my 22-250 bolt rifle with a Shilen barrel.  It is advertised at 4,000.
