« on: November 16, 2004, 03:40:03 PM »
thanks to the military, im a new north carolina hunter. we never had bears in ohio. so i want to give it a shot. while scouting some plartially swampy lowland a few weeks ago for deer and squirels, i found some bear tracks. then i saw the past harvest numbers on this area. it produces a lot of bears. problem is i dont no where to start  to actually locate the bears. any advice would help.there is no baiting in nc so i need to no food to look for or prefered terrain...

Well, this idiot is going out and wander around a mountain with a big gun and a sharp knife.  If I shoot a bear, I am going to hope to run into someone with an ATV.
There!  See how easy it is? :)
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

I'm not experienced with hunting bears in North Carolina, it's differant than hunting here in Alaska.  I recommend going to your local Library, get a book on bears.  Especially one written by an environmentalist, they know how to find bears, and what they eat at differant times of the year in differant areas.  Also can you call them in your area?  If so get a varmit call and give it a try.  Just be ready, they will be coming in looking to kill something and eat it, make sure it's not you.  I've called them in New Mexico, it worked well there till I called in a Couger.

Bye the way, you said you're in the military.  Pope or Fort Bragg?  I'm going to Pope in January to thaw out for a couple of months.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I don't get it.  Is the bear hunting for an idiot?  Or is an idiot hunting bears?
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

There are a few methods you can use, when baiting is not allowed, one is a mock bait site with attractant scents sprayed in the mock bait site, honey burns can be affective at times, another is calling methods in high bear populations work well, sow in heat works well in attracting dominant males, also using animal in distress call, make sure you use the right call, rabbit(jack/Rabbit)(Cottontail) etc...
But if you are going to call, better to be off the ground, bears can sneak up on you before you know it, you may find your self with some pudding down your leg real fast;) LOL.  Bears come in very aggressively, room full of teeth, if you do stay on the ground to call, have a friend sit back to back, so you both can cover 360 around you. Good luck. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.
