Contender problem
« on: January 12, 2005, 02:42:49 PM »
Hi,
I just got my Contender back from the factory for a problem and a new type hammer install and it worked fine for awhile. Now all of a sudden the action will not close or the barrel will not go in and lock up. The barrel dosen't even get half way down into lock up before it stops dead cold. I'll have to admit this is my first Contender but I can't see whats binding up when I look in the action. If any of you old hands have any ideas on this I'm all ears!
                                                            Thanks!

Hard to tell without looking at it so my best guesses are these.

Look at the locking lugs on the barrel to see if they move in and out.   If the lugs are not moving that could cause the condition you describe

Next I would check the frame to see if the lug recess clear and see if the hammer block safety moves with out a barrel in the frame.

Oh yeah, one more thing.  It may be the extractor the is stuck out keeping the barrel from closing.  Check to see if it moves freely when removed from the frame.

Good luck.

Hi,
Well it turned out that the firing pin was not retracting like it was suppose to and hitting the extractor. I don't know if this is a common problem or i'm just lucky! I don't see anyway to get in that area to check it out or if there is an after market spring ,ect. Anyway thanks for the help and hopefully it will maybe correct it's self now that I'm using the pistol again.
                                                                Thanks!

Cock the hammer and you'll see a screw that, when removed, releases the circular breech block (or recoil shield) containing the firing pins and spring.  It can be removed to the front and you can clean it all up and see if you need a new firing pin spring.  Caution: small parts.

Hi Ron,
I'll look into that. The factory just had this pistol and I told them I had this problem. I thought it would be cleared up but maybe it worked when they had it and that was it! You never know now a days. I'll see if I can take it apart and maybe clean it up.
                                                                  Thanks
