Just wondering what you guy`s think would be better for the P dog hunt. I have a 17hmr and a 25-06 want one more gun not a reloader. Rich

no question both of them. lol. if i was just to get one in your shoes i would get the 22-250 it shoots flater and hits harder at longer ranges . now if i can i would like to put in some extra imput . what about the 204 ruger??? shoots flater , has as good of barrel life as the 223 ,hits almost as hard as the 22-250 and is really turning out to be tac drivers i've not even shot mine yet but from what i've heard from others it is p-dog poision!

Since you do not reload, I would definitely go with the 223.
The ammo for 223 in most areas is considerably cheaper than 22-250, plus you get the bonus of being able to practice with cheap 55gr FMJ Remington or Winchester ammo for about $4.50 a box !
If you handloaded, I would say go with the 22-250. You can load a box of 22-250 for only pennies (due to the extra powder burned) more than a box of .223

Take a look at the winchester varmint pack at wallmart in .223 or 22-250 they are both reasonably priced.I wan't a 22-250 real bad,already have a UV .223.

Given the set of facts as you laid them out the .223 is the only way to go. It also fills the bill nicely between the .17 HMR and the 25-06....<><.... :grin:

of the two you said i would go with the 22-250 it just plain beats the 223 in everything sep money.  you can fine factory loaded ammo for the 22-250 everywhere from walmart to every gun store and heck your a west sider gander mountain will have every kind of ammo under the sun . the 22-250 is justa little bit more pricy then the 223 but it is worth it take a look.


223 remington 50 vmax path:  50 yards .4" high 100 yards 1.3" high 150 1.1" high 200 yards .1" low 225 yard 1.3" low ,for a P-dog (with a 3" vital zone) your point blank rang is only 227 with remington's 50 vmax load .

22-250remington 50 vmax path: 50 yards 0.0" 100 yards .7" high 150 yards .7" high 200 yards .15" low 225 yards .9" low 250 yards 2.0" low, that give you a point black range with the remington 50 vmax load of 255(again that for a 3" vital zone)

now for the kicker

223 remington 50 vmax energy: 100 yards 928 flb 150 yards 809 flb 200 yards 701 flb 250yards 606 flb

22-250 reminton 50 vmax energy: 100 yards 1188 flb 150 yards 1044 200 yards 910 flb 250 yards 799 flb

that nearly 200 flb more energy at 250 yards at that right there your going to be getting a lot of those splashes they talk about .

now lets talk turkey. if you got a gun that can really shoot and your at a p-dog hunt your not going to want to just shoot them at 250 are you???? no  your going to try a least one 400 yard shot any gun can be "held over" the target to hit at long range but most the time what makes a hit a hit and a miss a miss is the wind. here are some longer range numbers on wind driff

10MPH wind wich i hope we don't have at the p-dog shoot

223: 100 yards 1.09" at 250 yards 7.55"300 yards 11.4" 350 yards 15.93" 400 yards 21.56"


just for something to look at how about.

10MPH wind

223 :1000 yards 198.112
22-250: 1000 yards 174.909

so put it this way you go the numbers  and they don't lie the 223 isn't that far behind the 22-250 but for p-dog and groundhogs (franklin county boys have to shoot groundhogs i think is a law somewhere) i would rather have the splash factor of the 22-250 but guess what i have ? a 223 and i have no plan of getting a 22-250 (unless of course my handiaholicness acts up again oh please oh please)

22-250: 100 yards .8" 250 yards 6.7" 300 yards 9.6" 350 yards 13.4" 400 yards 18.1

:D Thank`s for the replys guy`s . From what ive seen at G. M. only a 4.00 diff between the 2 for 50 rounds. Going to have go shoping and see what the gun shops have on hand. G.M. had a 223 handi for 199.00 could send it in for a 22-250 barrel i guest have both :grin:  Rich

What is the .204 ammo going for and how does it compare to the .223 and 22-250, would like to see some numbers like the ones above.

I think the 204 is 12-14.00 for 20 rounds at gander moutain. quite a bit more than 223 or 22-250

But I can buy 223 ammo for around $170/1000.  This is soft point 55 grain reloads.  Look for ammotogo (ammo to go) in the ammo section of gunbroker.com  Lake City brass and about 3200 fps.

Given the cost to start reloading, I'd have to shoot 3,300 rounds in order to pay for $100 of equipment at $0.14 to reload a round.  And I have lots of other things to do.  And this shoots better than I can.
