Been having some server problems again?
« on: January 11, 2005, 12:45:32 AM »
Seemed like all day long yesterday I had a hard time getting into the forums here. My browser would either give me a "hpbb error" message or "could not find page" message. Also it seemed to reeeeealy slow on Sunday too. I was just wondering if the server here was experiencing difficulty or not. How 'bout it Matt or GB? Might be on my end, just was wondering.

Hmmm, no problems here. May be time for you fellas to do some house cleaning.  I use Norton's Clean Sweep to clear out my internet cash and recycling bin about once a week.  This seems to make a big difference in speed and reliability.

Same same here...probably had a problem on one of the main carrier lines for our region and was routed differently...

Same thing here and my PC is running fine. When I can load any other page in micro seconds to a couple seconds, (broadband is great!!) I know there's a problem with a specific URL, not my PC. But, for a free service, I'm not gonna complain to GB.

My computer was down all day yesterday until 2:00 AM this morning when Matt finally got it fixed. So I was unaware of problems on site. Matt was working so he wasn't checking it either. He noticed it last night before coming over to my house to work on my computer. Sorry guys but it's just that neither of us were aware of the problem until last night when he noticed it. Dunno what happened or why. Well in general terms Matt does but just not sure the why of it happening.

Well we've isolated the problem and made the correction. Seems we had a rather computer illiterate person who is rather over weight and has a lot of gray in his hair messing around with controls he wasn't supposed to be messing with. Changed a setting that caused the system to not reset the sessions table as it was supposed to.

We won't name any names or embarass anyone but Matt said next time it happened he wuz gonna fix it so I could even see the table much less make changes to it.    :-D

Sessions length is currently set at 60 minutes. That really might be too long. But it is the maximum the software is set up to work with. I had set it for longer cuz I was doing something I thought "might" take more than that length of time and just forgot to reset it when I finished. My bad.

The lastest stats show we're delivering over 4 million page views per WEEK and getting 50,000+ visitors per week to the site total. Dat's a LOT of traffic. Both the software and the server are supposed to handle it OK and generally do. There is still some tweaking I think Matt will be doing to streamline things. In some cases on some pages there is just a ton of stuff that has to down load.

Thanks to Matt for his efforts GB, and if your like me with computers perhaps it's better to leave that technical stuff to the younger set like Matt....<><.... :-D

Just as an aside, it's better today, but not as fast loading and returning to screens as it was a couple of days ago, and that could reduce the number of "hits" and posts you have on the site....

I'm was getting increased errors too, and am still.  It mostly happens when I submit a post.  I get the "can't find url" error and lose my post.  It happens both at my dial-up connection at home and at the DSL connection at my wife's office computer.

thanks,

Ian, that's happened to me lots, not just here, though. I am now in the habit of copying my text before hitting the submit button, then if I loose the post, I can just paste and repost. It happened here once this am already, I think due to the traffic, the server is getting overloaded, from the looks of the count on our forum....

Most of the time when you get that message you didn't lose your post. It was made just fine. The screen it didn't get was the one to tell you it was posted. I've always gotten that from time to time. What I do is to open a new browser window. Generally you can do that by clicking on FILE - NEW - WINDOW. Then in that new windown just back up to the thread and hit REFRESH. If you see your post it was made. If you don't it wasn't. In case it wasn't just use the browser back button in your original windown to go back to the place you typed in your message. It should still be there at least MOST of the time. This time for sure COPY it before hitting SUBMIT. But almost 100% of the time it will post find the second try if it didn't the first.

Why this happens I have no clue. But it was happening to me even before we went to this software on a few occasions. We may need to reduce the sessions length again. I'll discuss it with Matt this afternoon and if needed let him do it.
