This thing is a hoot.   I've been shooting at a 3/8" plate this afternoon from about 65yds just playing around offhand.  I'm not much of a shot with iron sights but at this point that is irrelevant.   I loaded up a couple of the 350gr GCWFN boolits I cast from a Mountain Molds mold (that looks strange to see it written out hehe) and some 400gr Remington JSPs that I had.  IMR-4198 near the top of the trapdoor range with the WFNs and about 4.4cc of FFg 777 with the Remingtons.   The 350s had some real pop to them... and the plate showed it.  The 400s were plainly slower and softer but much more pleasant to shoot.

Woooo Hoooo(t),

I don't enjoy the smell or cleanup of real Black....  one reason my 54 and 36 cals are safe queens.  That 777 left enough smoke that I couldn't see the target for a couple seconds.  The wind was blowing in my face so I caught all of it.  I loaded up a couple 450gr FPs from a Lee mold with the 777 but I think those plain base bullets without a cookie had a little base meltdown going on.  Didn't hit anything with them.  My sizer is a 458, DJ says these like fatter boolits, in the 459-460 range so I think I'm gonna order a .460 for my lubricizer.  I'll probably have to enlarge my mold a thou or two.  I think someone posted how to do that a few months ago.

Ian, don't know if you've read this, but here tis anyway....
Quote
Cartridges: Use data specifically developed for Triple Seven FFG only. Cartridge loads should be used exactly as listed in this brochure. You may safely use a card or polyethylene wad up to .030" in thickness to protect the base of the bullet. Loading density should be 100% with light compression not to exceed .100". Testing has shown that Triple Seven will perform best when the bullet just touches the powder. Allow no airspace between the base of the bullet and the powder. Do NOT reduce loads by means of filler wads of inert filler material such as Grits, Dacron or Grex. Do not heavily compress powder charges. The use of filler wads, inert fillers or heavy compression may cause a dangerous situation which could cause injury and/or death to the shooter, bystanders or damage property. Do not create loads for cartridges not listed. Contact Hodgdon Powder Company for recommendations concerning other loads. *See WARNING below

thanks Quick, I was treating it as if it was Black.  I think I'll stick to smokeless from now on out.

Looks as if I was the guy at the range with plenty of empty benches around him this time around   .
