Saw and write up of this in an old Handloader Mag and wonder if anyone has tried it?

Advocate, why not chamber for the 416 Taylor, a 338 mag case necked up to 416. The Taylor can be loaded down, but the smaller 350 mag case can't produce as much velocity as the 338 mag case. You will get a more flexable cartridge. The Taylor is only 100 fps slower then the 416 Remington, and will fit in a 98 Mauser action.   8)

JoeKool: You're points are all well taken, except that most military mausers are intermediate length (57mm) rather than 30-06 (63mm) length, at least all of them I own.   Hence the 350 Rem Mag is more easily used in the intermediate length actions, not to mention the short .308 length actions for which it was specifically designed.  I have therefore considered the idea of a .350 Remington Magnum or some other .350 Remington case based wildcat in one of my military surplus actions.

I read about an 8mm improved on the 350 Rem Mag case  that produced  2800 fps with the 200 gr bullet and 2670 with the 220 gr.  Wondered what  improved .350 Rem cases in 7mm, .308, .338, .366 (9.3 mm), .411, .416, .458 and .475 calibers would be like?  

The Winchester Short Magnum casings are very promising but as yet I've not met anyone who's had any experience with adapting that casing to M-98 surplus mausers.

Most 98 Mausers will take a cartridge length of 2.250". That is only .090" short of the 30/06 or 7mm mag length. A local gunsmith, that does most of my work, told me that he has built a few 416 Taylors on 98 actions, with no problems with aol cartridge length. I think the 350 mag case necked to any caliber would make a good cartridge. Give a call to Redding, RCBS, Clymer or JGS, they can check their records and may have designs for cartridges based on the 350 mag case. This could save you time, money, and headaches. Sometimes they can put you in touch with people that have had dies or reamers made for such cartridges. I wouldn't go over a 30 deg shoulder to prevent feeding problems in bolt actions. I think I read that Remington is producing 350 mag ammo again, and chambering a rifle for it. Then there is the short magnum case, just a little bigger body diameter, but no belt. Isn't wildcating great fun.   8)
