BAR in 338
« on: March 07, 2005, 02:22:58 PM »
Anyone have any experience with a BAR Safari in .338?  I am looking at the regular Safari with a boss (blued with walnut - not the stalker or synthetic).  Not so much interested in accuracy results as I am in reliability, function, does it hold up with this heavy caliber, action etc.  Any reservations with your purchase.  I have BARs in 30.06 and 243, and am very pleased with these others.  Thanks for any info.

Bought one in 1971 while in the military.  Used it for years until hunting in S. California became more and more dangerous with hordes of people roaming the hills and shooting at anything that moved..another story.

No concerns, probably put close to 1000 reloads through it.  Only problem I had was to make sure it was cleaned thoroughly after a range session.  Not just run a brush through the barrel but get into the action and remove all the powder residue.

Mine is magnaported and btwn that and the gas action, recoil was manageable.  Good rifles.

I have the gun you are looking for:  BAR w/Boss in .338.  It is the most enjoyable BAR that I own.  The BOSS does make a little more noise, but the reduction in recoil makes the noise tolerable.  I have used this rifle for the last 5 years in all hunting situations.  It has never let me down.  I grant you that it is not needed for the deer hunting that I do.  But, nothing you hit with the .338 moves.  No matter what others tell you about the Boss, it does work!  This gun shoots sub MOA and will keep shots within 3 inches at 300yds.

Thanks for the information.  I had trouble to find folks with BAR / 338 experience.  I have a line on one up here in Ontario and think I'll go ahead and move on it.  I'll use it for moose and likely deer since I hate to switch rifles after shooting it on a regular basis.

I had mine magna-ported when I bought it.  Maybe that had something to do in reducing recoil.  Whatever you do, clean it thoroughly, and I mean detail strip it before using it on a hunt!
