Adjusting Dovetail Sights
« on: January 05, 2005, 12:47:23 PM »
Just got my G19, which I love. It came with the factory Trijicon night sights, and they are positioned right-of-center. (I'm thinking Heinie Straight Eights later. Opinions?) My first and second range visits, using Rem/UMC yellow box 115MC shows it shoots about 2-3 inches to the right. OK, so I hesitatingly grabbed my trusty STEEL punch, wrapped it in layers of masking tape, put the slide in a vise, and tapped...and tapped...and tapped some more, and the darn thing won't move. Truthfully I was afraid to tap too hard. The sight already is showing signs of newbie-itis. Question is this: what's the easiest way to adjust the dovetail sights? I've seen the expensive sight pushers out there, and before I invest I wanted to gather input from the experts on this forum. Sears sells a simple steel drift, but I don't want to booger up the sights. Thanks in advance, and shoot safe.

Hopback,
Just noticed your post. A sight pusher is the only safe way to go with the night sights. A sharp blow to these sights can break the trititum lamps. It's worth the expense to take it to a gunsmith to center the sight. You might have to go back for fine adjustments, but I bet if you center the rear sight it'll be pretty well right on. Good shooting!

Edit:
If a gunsmith is not an option, try a wooden dowell rather than punch to drift the sight. I don't think the wood would transmit enough shock to shatter the lamps.-------------
