OK, just what IS the proper way to load my 1911?  I've been putting in the loaded magazine, releasing the slide to chamber a round, then pulling the magazine to top it off.  Is this proper or am I headed to the gunsmith?

The only thing I would add to that is to release the slide by pulling it back and letting go rather than by pushing the slide stop down.  The slide stop is just that; a stop to hold it open.  You can eventually round the notch on the bottom of the slide by always releasing it with the slide stop.  Better to do it by hand.  44 Man

Dusty,
Nothing wrong with your loading technique. That's pretty much the standard procedure. I train to come over the top of the slide with my weak hand and slingshot the slide into battery. I have never seen any undue wear due to using the slide release though. Most shooters won't live long enough to perform that operation to a point where it is problematic.

edit: Should have mentioned that the slide stop is softer than the slide on my Kimbers, and I suspect it's so on most other guns. The slide stop is an inexpensive part. No worries mate!
