Big Bores and the PD shoot!
« on: January 14, 2005, 07:47:37 PM »
Just was wondering if anybody is going to take a big bore out west to try at the prairie dogs?
Been thinking of taking the 44 mag. barrel, along with the 223 just to see if I can lob a heavy bullet and hit one of them PD's.
If the wind is up these heavy bullets might buck the wind pretty good.
What do ya'll think???

I can always bring along my 1895GS for giggles if I can make it :)  :) I'm sure a 300 grain Nosler would take down the mighty PD...

You guys sure are gluttons for punishment. You gonna shoot those things 500 times a day like Wes said we might get shots? Not this old fat boy. My doctor told me I shouldn't be shooting anything but rimfires until I get the shoulder surgery I need.

I'll have a rimfire along for sure, a .223 and likely a 6MM Rem. and of course the H&R .30-30 as it's the only gun I own that fits what these forums are about.

Hey Dennis, I tried to call you at 9:00 PM and got no answer. Wondered if you'd gone to bed already. Since you were on so late I reckon you just weren't home. You gonna be around today for me to call?

If I can get my sawed-off Pardner 12 gauge barrel scoped and sighted in before then I am thinking seriously about bringing it just for a few shots before they get leary and hole up on us at the close ranges. The 30-30 with some lighter bullets will be next and then for the lo-oooo-ng range dogs.........well I haven't decided yet.........maybe a 25-06 with 87gr. bullets. Maybe a .223 or .243, just don't know yet. Heck I may load up some 110 grainers for my 30-06 Vanguard.............chunks............bullet chunks or PD chunks one, huh?  :)

I think I'll bring my 44 mag. barrel for the close shots. 223 barrel for out to 200,220 Swift in my Ruger for the really longshots. I think I'll load some 110 gr's one's for my 300 Wby. to about 3800 fps. just for giggles. Also I may load some 125 gr.XTP's for my 357 Herret, and carry my 22 match grade barrel for the Contender. Sounds like there's going to be a  lot of powder burned in the panhandle. Digger

:-D Man..thats is a pile to bring Digger...the only thing I get squeemish about is if we get pulled over by an LEO.....4 guys in the vehicle and 35 guns and 7000 rounds of ammo and we calmly explain to him we're going prarrie dog hunting!! .....  ( I bet MSP_Ret would pay good money for a video of that so he and his buddies could get a few giggles out of it!! )

I'm with GB on this one.  You don't want to shoot a big banger that many times.

NOW....having said that    I have shot some smallish critters with a 300 grain hollow point from my 45-70.  It makes big peices into little peices :-D

Deadeye, that MV stop with all that ammo and guns would make a hilarious traning flick, I can see it now with the guns and ammo all laid out on the ground and you guys sitting in a circle with cuffs on while the lone trooper figures out what the heck was going on, chances are if he is a Trooper he's probably a shooter or hunter anyway but it would look serious!!!....<><.... :-D
