Reduced loads, 300 WSM?
« on: January 17, 2005, 09:28:07 AM »
I'm just learning about reloading right now and I have a question.  I'm not going to run out and try reduced loads or anything like that right now, but I am curious.  I know that one day I'll want to try some reduced loads for my wife.

How far can you reduce loads for a 300 WSM?  I haven't looked at any numbers, but I'm assuming that the starting loads are near 30'06 levels.  What about .308 levels?  30-30?

What is the limiting factor with reduced loads?

Thoughts on how a reduced load in a WSM will affect the powder column that is supposed to make it a more effieicent cartridge?

At regular 300 WSM levels, what is the velocity loss per inch of barrel (***at normal levels**)?

Any input is appreciated.  Thanks guys,
JCM

In the 300 WSM you should be around 30-30 levels, depends on how reduced you go. Hodgdons web site has some good info.

For those interested, here's some info for Hodgdons H4895 with reduced loads.

It's what I use in my 7mm WSM when using it for a varmint gun. Works real well, dead on at 100 with the reduced loads and dead on at 300 with a max load of the same powder for big game.

From one load to the other there is no sight adjustment at all, at least in my gun.

Reduced loads, 300 WSM?

:D Hey there JCM,

Shouldn't be any problem with the reduced loads. Raynor gave you good info, and you can usually find "Red," loads in the Speer loading manual.

Another good source for reduced loads is the Lyman cast bullet manual.

I have and do use reduced loads in rifles for my wife and daughter as well as my own. In this way, they can use their hunting rifle for year long practice with never a chance of developing bad habits such as a flinch.

In fact, I have found that when using a scope it is a simple matter to sight their rifle in with the "hunting" loads just before the season. Then the few shots they may take at game are never felt because of the excitment of the moment. No flinching, no problems.

Just follow good information and have fun with your reloading!

Keep em coming!
