Got my .280 last night......
« on: January 15, 2005, 04:37:56 AM »
Being new to the handi scene I wasn't sure how I would take to this gun but without even shooting it yet I'm liking it alot. I couldn't wait till today to play with it so I started last night. Upon the advice of all you guys i quickly and carefully disassemled it for a thorough cleaning. What is that tar-like substance they are shipped in? I sprayed gum cutter into every nook and cranny and scrubbed it with a tooth brush(I hope she doesn't mind  ). I scrubbed the $#*% out of the barrel to get it clean! I then oiled everything with Inhibitor and reasssembled. Next came the scope, a Simmons 4.5x14AO using Weaver high rings. I lock-Tited the mounting rail screw with the blue stuff. But guess what? No hammer extension!! Seeing how hard it is to use without one I thought that would be the first thing they put in the box! I bought a box of 140 gr core-lockts just to shoot it in with and to get some brass. I'll let you know tomorrow how this beauty shoots. Thanks for all the advice, I'm sure I'll be bugging you all very soon.

Congrats on the new Handi!! The hammer extension should be in a clear/white plastic envelope in the box, it may be stuck to the inside of the box somewhere.

If it was not in the box just call CS and I am sure they will send you one right out, free!!! It usually comes with the gun and with a scope mounted it could be a safety issue, trying to cock the hammer without much to grab onto. I know is has a transfer bar safety but better to be extra safe, it dosen't cost any more....<><....

I think you're gonna like that .280.    I like mine.  Mine shoots the cheap Core-lockts just fine, printing 1-1/4" groups or better with no trouble. :agree:   In fact haven't bothered to try any other factory loads and intend to reload the Remington brass when I get a good supply on hand.   :D

Both my hammer extensions were in a clear plastic bag stapled to the cardboard filler. Had to call the gun shop and ask about the first one and then the second was in the same place. :-D  :-D

No such luck, I checked three times and no hammer extension. O well, I guess I'll be calling them on Tuesday. I went to a gun show today and bought some JB bore cleaner paste and scrubbed the barrel real good so I guess tomorrow will tell how this thing shoots. Does anybody have the size for the o-ring used to float the barrel?

I use one that is 9/16"OD x 3/8"ID x 3/32" thick but I have seen some that were a bit thinner and smaller on used handis and sportsters barrels that I have bought.

I'm pretty sure H&R will send you one for free if you tell them it was not in the box with the gun. Perhaps just return to where you bought it and get another one from them, they can take one from another box you can let them get one from H&R....<><....

Well, I just shot my new Handi!  Just about frooze my @$$ off but I had a blast. Shot the whole box of 140 Core-lokts, was able to wring about 2" grouping @100 yards. I'm pleased so far, I still need to get the o-rong for the foreend. Now I have some brass to start playing with reloads. Thanks again for all of the advice! Now, do I want to shoot Hornady SST or Nossler Accubonds.........decisions, decisions........
