Nothing fancy, but I am pleased with them.  The top one is in 30-40 Krag with a 3-9x33 Leupold compact scope.  I have since put a rubber buttpad (handloads are a Hornady 180gr JRN with 46.0gr of IMR4350 and they kick with this light of a gun) on it and intend to slim down the front wood this winter.  Incidently, I sighted it at a nearby indoor range with a maximum length of 25 yards.  I figured that would get me on the paper at 100 yards when I could get to the outdoor range.  When I did finally get to the outdoor range, the first two shots landed in the 1" dia center ring.  The third shot did not, but it was my fault, not the gun (my excuse was I was excited).  I decided not to touch the scope settings.  Anyway, I am pleased with it.

The lower one is in .375 Winchester with a peepsight and a target front sight.  Accuracy is not as good because of my eyes (trifocals now), but it is as good as can be expected (the front and rear rings were sized to match the concentric target I use).  I can shoot under an inch at 50 yards and 2 to 2-1/2" at 100 yards.   Handloads are either a 220gr Hornady with 36.0gr of Reloader-7 or a Lyman 375449GC with 29.0gr of Re-7.  The rubber buttpad was on it when I got it and it is necessary.  All three loads are full to the base of the seated bullet.   I also load some black powder loads in this for my wife (sort of a faux 38-55).  The recoil of that load is mild and accuracy is good -- at least for the first 5 o 10 rounds.

After shooting these, my hat is off the 45-70 shooters -- particularly the ones that still have the metal buttplate.

I have two No 3s also. Mine are both in 22 caliber.  I have a .223 Rem and a .22 Hornet.   Both are accurate and a pleasure to shoot. I've had them both for 10 years and have taken many varmits with them.  I have always dreamed about a 45/70, but have resisted the recoil.  I have a Marlin 1895 in 45/70.

very nice classic looking rifles.  Here is my Dave Talley built custom No.3 chambered in .223.   Hart barrel, Kepplinger trigger, custom 1-pc. scope base, English walnut hardware, etc....  and shoots as good as it looks.

Cajun:  I am curious about the "pistol grip" stock and the No. 3 lever.  I have seen several No. 3's around here that have the same setup (usually, they usually have just a No. 1 rear wood installed).  I picked up one and could not get a comfortable grip with it.  My fingers wouldn't go under the lever and they did not feel right going over the lever.  How do you hold yours?

I would give my right (you can imagine) for a No. 3 in .375 Winchester!  I have always loved these guns, but have yet been able to find one at a decent price.  I partially gave up, and now have a T/C Contender carbine in .375 Winchester w/ a 21" barrel.  I would trade it in a second for a No. 3, so maybe I will luck in to one soon!

Don't get me wrong, I love my .375 Contender.  There's just something about a No. 3 that gets me!

Yeah, but I don't know if I could bring myself to rebarrel a perfectly good No. 3!

I went and shot my Contender .375 Mthe other day, and that thing is a beast!  The gun only weighs around 5.5lbs, and those 200gr Sierra's are brutal on my shoulder.  This is definitely not a bench/target gun!

I picked up a #3 in 45-70 from a friend the other day.  Only had a chance to take it out and shoot it once so far.  Anyone have a spare buttstock from a #3 or #1 for sale?  Cheap?  I want to put a good recoil pad on this but I don't want to cut the factory stock.

I alway wanted a No 3 in .30-40, my idea of a great rifle. I had one in .22 Hornet, but got tired of cuttin' the tips off my fingers while reloadin' that skinny brass. Anyway I traded it off, been kickin' myself ever since for not rebarrelin' it. The thickest recoil pad I ever saw was on one of the .45-70s, seems the guy wanted a elephant gun and was loadin' it to +P+ pressures.  :-D
