Barrel swappin' question
« on: October 06, 2004, 12:56:39 PM »
I have a ported 1895 Guide gun. I want to use this gun in long range side matches in Cowboy Action Shooting, but the ports make it illegal. I was considering having the barrel changed by Marlin when I found a good deal on barrels at Numrich Gun Parts. I have a good gunsmith, but what I need to know is, other than length, are the barrels of a 1895G and a standard 1895 the same?

The barrels are the same thread dimensions, but they wont just screw on and go shooting. Most likely the headspacing, and even the alignment of top dead center may need to be adjusted. It's a job for a smith, or good machinist.

Oddly enough I have read of numerous barrel swaps with Marlins where the old barrel just screwed on and went shooting.....Checking headspace is always a good idea, but try it before you go to a smith, you just might be surprised.  As for the ports, would it be possible to turn down the end of the barrel and press a sleeve over the end?

Holiday,
You might want to give Marlin a call and get a price on a barrel swap.  They were swapping ported barrels for a nominal fee.  The repair work I've seen coming from the factory is excellent.
Best,

Thanks, gentleman. I have just about decided to kep it the way it is and save up for another gun for CAS. I really like the looks of the 1895 Cowboy! And, it's a good excuse for another gun!
