100 or 150 gr. for 209x.50?
« on: September 25, 2005, 06:37:53 AM »
I just shot my new Encore muzzleloader.  I plan on hunting in Pike County Illonois this year and naturally wanted to use the extra punch of 150 grains of Triple 7 pellets.  Well, the rifle simply would not group.  I was using Hornady polymer tipped sabots with the tail for holding the pellets.  The groups were inconsistent and very poor.  after trying to sight in at 50/100 yards, I cut down the charge to 100 grains and shot three shots touching each other in the bulls-eye at 100 yards!

Has anyone else had accuracy problems with 150 grains?

For my style of hunting and the associated accuracy, I have never even tried three pellets of 777.  ALMOST everyone I have heard talk about using 3 says their accuracy is not acceptable.

Maybe some of the guys who have been successful with 3 will speak up.

One last thought, seems most shooters of loose 777 think it is more accurate than the pellets.  Pellets are convenient for hunting purposes though!

Mike, Thanks. that has been my experience as well,l not only with the Encore, but the T/C Black Diamond as well.  An accurate shot will trump inaccurate power any day.  Thanks for the input

To get 3 pellets to shoot well you will need to try a lot of different bullets and find the ones that shoot the best. I personally like two pellets in my Encore. It seems to shoot most sabots well. I had great luck with the 295 gr. powerbelts. Drop your load down and give it a try.  :D

Around 100 grains of loose powder seems to shoot best.  Those 250 grain shockwaves/hornady (same bullet) kill like a champ and shoot pretty darn flat.  I've shot 15 deer with my smoke pole using 100 grains.  Plenty of power.

Mine uses 3 pellets but they are Pyrodex with T/C 250gr sabot. It took a lighter bullet to group with 3 pellets. I had another  barrel that 300gr sabot and 2 pellets did the trick. In Utah we can only use a 1x scope so I chose open sites  and had to get it on paper finding the right combo.

I guess the point is that based on the numerous comments, you are going to have to buy different bullets and several powders/pellets and just find the load that works best in your weapon.   The encore is a mighty fine muzzle-loader.  Just have to dial it in.

But you can see from this thread... and if you paroose others... many/most people are using

~100gr powder
~250gr bullet

Not everyone... but a lot.  At least he might get something workable until he finds something ideal

-- also, I know a friend of mine has good luck with 100 gr pyrodex and 295 gr powerbelt.

I've never had any luck with T7 powder. 150 grains of Pyrodex pellets has been an awesome hunting load for my wife and I in our Encores and Omegas. Here is the last couple of weeks game so far using a 250 Shockwave in front of the Pyro Pellets. (I know, I know her deer is nicer!)

Yes, I have had accuracy problems with 150 Grains of any powder in my
Encore. Not only that, but it will only shoot 250 grain sabots well, in part.
the 250 SST/Shockwave or 250XTP. I sent it back to TC once & I will again
after this season. 100 Gr. gives me plenty of power, but I wanted a little
flatter traj. for a couple of my stands that I occasionally use. It bothers me
because TC promotes these as being 209X50 Magnums. But, if it won"t
shoot the faster loads it is a magnum in name only. If I bought a .257STW
& it would not group unless downloaded to 7X57 power level's, then I
would own a .257STW in name only.

Just my thoughts

I am using the 50 cal Honady Lock and Load Sabots shooting 250 Gr bullets with 130 grains of pyrodex pellets - getting about 3" groups at 100 yds using the barrel mount Williams peep sight.  You know they make the pyrodex pellets in both 50 and 30 grains - I use two 50s and one 30, not sure why but I have not heard of others doing this.  Kind of a compromise - a bit more power than only 100 grains, but not so much powder that you are spewing unburned powder from the barrel and effecting accuracy.

I tried  2 x 50  and 1 x 30 of 777 and Remington ML 209's........it caused a pause before it fired when pulled the trigger. No longer a problem though, have switched to American Pioneer FFG..........130 grain load. More accurate and easier to clean..........also, 295 and 348 Powerbelts shot to same point of aim at 100 yards. Also switched to Winchester 209's

Mine shoots 3, 50 grain 777 pellets behind a 250 grain Shockwave pretty consistently into 1.5"s?  I have shot it with only 2 pellets but the accuracy is about the same.  I figure I might as well use 3 if they shoot the same?  Maybe I got lucky?
