When did Winchester go from the steel buttplates I have a 1947 model with steel and need a buttplate for a 1948 model will it be steel or the hard rubber (plastic type) ? Thanks in advance.

The Model 70s made in 1948 will also have steel butt plates. I have a Model 70 made in 1952 and it has a steel butt plate. According to page 152 of Roger Rule's book on the Model 70, Winchester didn't switch from steel to plastic until 1959.

While : I appreciate the response and I have to confess I had only partly posted the correct question, the correct question should have been the model 94 pre 64 all else is correct, yess on the model 70 I have a 1948 model that sports a steel plate, but have just bought a replacement pre-64 butt stock with steel plate for the model 94 will use the buttstock that is the best looking when it arives, again thanks for your response.

m 94 steel but plate

I have a m 94 I bought about 1968 and it had a steel butt plate with real sharp edges ( don't know year of manufacture but I could find it) . Wasn't fun to shoot prone in a T shirt. I restocked that gun and put a rubber butt plate on that I like a lot better.
The original plate was nearly flat and had little marks stamped into it to reduce slipping. It wasn't well fit to the stock.
