Bird's head frame grip frame from a Vaquero .45 to a .44?
« on: January 21, 2005, 09:19:58 AM »
I recently bought a Vaquero .44 mag. I want to replace the grip with a Ruger bird's head. The Ruger parts order list says it is $105 for the grip frame minus the panels. The only parts that show the need for factory fitting are barrels and cylinders, according to this list. I called Ruger and they said that they will only replace original parts, as everyone knows. But what burns me is they said "BH grip frames are only for their production guns". Undaunted, I asked if Vaquero cylinder frames are generic enouhg to allow grip frames to bolt up regardless of caliber. I was given a very short "Yes". My question to all of you experienced SA guys is: Will a .45 BH grip frame fit on a .44 Vaquero? Where can I get a real Vaquero grip frame if it will, short of buying another gun. Why I'd even pay for the smith work if some one wanted to trade. My gun is currently sporting the regular rose wood grips. If it won't bolt up I guess I'll try to find some Blackhawk laminate grips. Will they fit a Vaquero? Thanks for your time and thought.

Typically the grip frames interchange on new Rugers although there are reports that sometimes the gripframe on one gun might overhange the gun's frame when you do the switch.

Qualite makes frames for Rugers. You can order direct I think and I know for sure that Brownells sells qualite products. The standard steel one for the New Model Ruger is listed as #737-3000-002 and is listed in my catalog at 99.95 with no grips. They also make a brass version.

It's not too difficult to do the switch, you may have to do some grinding to make the gripframe match the gun frame perfectly if that sort of thing is important to you. Some people find a little offset doesn't bother them.

well I tried to switch a stainless steel birdshead grip to my stainless steel Bisley Vaquero and no workee, but them Bisley's are somewhat diff., may work on a standard Vaquero. I wanted to see how a Bisley grip would look on a short 3.75" barrel. :o
