A 686 would be an L-Frame. When in doubt, go to Brownell's web site: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/schematics/SchemMFG.aspx Click on S&W then scroll down to the revolvers. Each model is listed by frame size.

Thank you! Will an L frame (686) hold up well to .357 +P loads?

S&W L Frame revolvers (686 / 586 and variants) will hold up quite well to full house 357 Magnum loads (factory or PROPERLY LOADED handloads). I have never heard of 357 +P loads. Any SAMMI spec 357 ammunition is fine in the L Frame. In my opinion, they are among the finest double action 357 revolvers ever made. I have several and shoot them often.
