17HMR and Rem. Auto, What Happened????
« on: February 19, 2005, 04:37:16 PM »
Was at the range today.

My buddy and my self were shooting at the 50yd. line. He had just changed scopes from one rifle to the other. After only about 5 or 6 rounds, he had a CARTRIDGE RUPTURE! He was wiping his face and blinking his eyes. when I turned to see what was up. The case was blown out the bottom and even the rim was severly swelled. Tore the bolt into pieces. AND... he was shooting Remington ammo. He's OK, but the rifle is a loss. Told him to call Remington on Monday and think about getting one of those high dollar bolt rifles, that look like a centerfire. I think he should at least get that for what happened today.
Thoughts????

I hope he wasn't wiping his face of blood :eek:

Jam? No. Then the barrel would have ruptured too. Maybe that cartridge had too much powder in it. Like some jackbong took his eyes off the assembly line or sumtin. That's a really strange case. Never heard of another incident like it. You're lucky you weren't injured in the process.
Tell ur friend to ***** Remington out. That's crapola.  :D

Fishman;

I think the term is Firing Before Returning To Battery. I might have mislead you into saying the case blew out of the bottom of the rifle. Not the case. The cartridge ruptured and blew out of the bottom of the case of the round, near the rim. the clip was still in the rifle. My bad.  :oops:
But no ... he was not wiping any blood from his face. He was darn Lucky!
But I think Remington needs to make up for it with a rifle of better quality and price. Don't you think?

Oh most certainly, and I'd hope they would do backflips trying to accomodate the incident. At least I would.  :D
