Silhouette shooting in the Wichita KS area
« on: December 28, 2004, 05:20:52 PM »
Hi,

I am new to the Wichita area and new to this forum.  I am interested in shooting .22 rifle silhouette in open or hunter class, air rifle silhouette and air rifle Field Target.  I have shot all but the hunter class before.

Can you help me out with a place to shoot/matches in the Wichita/Derby area.

Thanks,

Bill T.

Here is the link for NRA sanctioned matches.  There are not a lot of shoots on there now, but there should quite a few more appearing for the 2005 year in the next month.

Bill, I live in the KC area and last year I became interested in trying to shoot some smallbore rifle silhouette.  Unfortunately there just doesn't seem to be any venues for this activity.  Topeka has a couple of "fun shoots" (read unsanctioned matches) during the year and the other places I found were all on the Missouri side.

Some other options for you might be to go check out the Lake Afton range where they shoot IHMSA smallbore silhouette.  I think that they were talking about setting up a bank of 1/5th scale targets...granted they are at IHMSA distances of 25, 50, 75, 100 yards.  In my limited experience, this translates into about 3-4 more targets for the beginner.  Another possibility is to drive a couple of hours to the range where I shoot (Williamsburg...about 30 min past Emporia) where we shoot IHMSA silhouettes.  I know they always have a set of 1/5th scale targets set out at matches and the match director would certainly let you shoot your rifle at them (assuming you follow standard rules of no hypervelocity ammo).  Generally I bring either my cowboy rifle or my Finnfire to the match as I like to shoot rifles and pistols.

I run the smallbore rifle silhouette matches in Columbia MO.  We have several who drive in from the KC area.  The range would be about 135 miles from the Kansas border on I-70, with about 130 of that on I-70.  The slowest driving will be getting out of KC.  Our matches are on Sundays with sighting in starting at 8 am and the match for the first 40  starting at about 9 AM.  After the first 40 we take a break for lunch and then shoot another 40.  You could  just shoot the second 40 if you wanted a later start in the morning.

If they were to have matches in Topeka I would get to at least some of them and visit relatives in the area.

Wichita to Columbia is about 6 h drive each way.  That would take some real motivation for two 40 round matches.

Thanks for all the help.  I am limited on time and would not be interested in driving more than one hour each way for matches.  I have read where there are Field Target matches in Eastern NE.  I do have relatives up that way so it is a possibility.

I grew up in Central NE and at that time, early 80s, there were quite  a few .22 silhouette matches in NE.

I am disappointed that there aren't more matches here in Kansas.  Lots of interest in deer hunting.

I moved here from Southern CA.  Even with all of the gun hatred there, there was a lot of shooting matches of all kinds going on.

Where has the shooting fever gone??

Shooting fever's going pretty good right up the road from you near Salina.
Tappen Hill GC has regular monthly BPCR matches (200 meters - 500 meters) and a 1/5th scale .22 match (50 meters - 200 meters) also. I know it's not the same sil. type matches you were looking for but they're just as fun and a whole lot more challenging.
