cabelas 1858 antique 'old west' finish

I just got one of these from Cabelas.  It is my first BP pistol, and I wanted to know if anyone else has had any experience with this pistol or comments of this 'new' finish, etc.

In general the pistol looks great!!  I want the old look, and that's what it is, it looks banged up a bit, almost like a black finish was put on then taken off.

You could probably get the same look by putting naval jelly on a regular gun.

I once knew a guy who dunked a whole revolver into battery acid!  'Didn't even protect the bore!  :shock: Dumsheit!.
The "Old West" models have been tumbled in a coarse media.  You could "antique" a gun yourself with less aggressive means.  I just use and hold them long enough to look "old".

Thanks for the info guys, the pistol still looks good.  Still have not had a chance to fire it yet.  A couple of questions though ......

1. What is a good holster?  Where to get it?
2. Is the R & D conversion worth it?
3. Who makes the best repros?

Both the R&D and the Kirst cylinders are better made and higher quality than the gun you're putting it in.  When worn out, the gun is the throw-away part.

The conversion cylinder gives you a dual class gun, and in the unported version, is ATF legal.
